Publisher's summary

The world is blind...then one boy is born with sight.

Nestled in a mountain haven, the remaining people of the world live in a village that is ordinary but strict. A severe peace must be kept severely, as they say. It's all that keeps them from descending into the chaos that claimed the world 100 years ago.

Led by the Prophet Valdas and his Regents, the villagers work, play, marry, and have families. They gather in ceremony once a year to celebrate their Day of Remembrance. Life is planned, precise, and predictable, until the special abilities of 11-year-old Andrius threaten to undermine it all.

Really enjoyed

I really enjoyed this book. Interesting concept and the narrator who is the author did a great job in my opinion. We read this book for bookclub and I would recommend to others.

I Wanted to Punch People

Weird or not, I gauge great writing by the depth of my desire to punch the villain(s) or spend more time with the protagonist. FWtSS accomplished both.

Premise: genius
Audio: occasionally glitchy
Narration: excellent
Characters: fantastic
Voices: unique and distinct

Usually I can count on one hand the books I consider worth multiple re-reads. Now I’ll have to use two hands.

Literary Classic with the Sound of Light

I heard about this book when it released and is been high on my to-be-read list. It exceeded my expectations.
The setting and world building were incredible as was the narrative style. The mythology woven into this isolated community kept me riveted as the story progressed. Nothing was predictable yet there were breadcrumbs that made it a solid plot. One of the few books I put into the re-readable category.
While there are some tense scenes with some violence/brutality, but not graphic, I recommend this book to mature 11-12-year-old readers and up.

The story of a little village that became real to me.

I purchased this audiobook to pleasantly pass the time while I was traveling. It quickly drew me in, and now that it is done, the characters live on in my imagination - I can't say goodbye and let them go! The storyline is intriguing and immediately engaging. I became invested and cheered on the protagonist in my heart, even when I had to pause and attend to other things in my life. There are a couple of sections that are emotionally devastating, so be prepared for heartbreak. (I have warned you!) Overall, though, it is triumphant and finds a way, despite adversity. There are many moral lessons woven throughout, so don't buy this book if you don't want to end up a better person. For everybody else, I recommend without reservation!
