Generations of dogs have been labeled training lemons for requiring actual motivation when all along they were perfectly normal. Numerous other completely and utterly normal dogs have been branded as canine misfits simply because they grew up to act like dogs. Barking, chewing, sniffing, licking, jumping up, and occasionally (just like people) having arguments are as normal and natural for dogs as wagging tails and burying bones.

More than 15 years ago, Tamar Geller began her career as a dog trainer by observing a scientific study of wolves in the wild. She realized that the socialization and parenting techniques they used to raise their cubs were rooted in bonding, communication, and play: not in aggression, dominance, or punishment. If people used these techniques when training their dogs, she realized, there would be no need for prong collars, choke chains, or any kind of physical or verbal aggression.

The Underdogs tells the story of Karen Shirk, felled at age 24 by a neuromuscular disease and facing life as a ventilator-dependent, immobile patient, who was turned down by every service dog agency in the country because she was "too disabled". Her nurse encouraged her to tone down the suicidal thoughts, find a puppy, and raise her own service dog. Karen did this, and Ben, a German shepherd, dragged her back into life.

Is it really human nature to stab one another in the back in our climb up the corporate ladder? Competitive, selfish behavior is often explained away as instinctive, thanks to evolution and "survival of the fittest", but in fact, humans are equally hard-wired for empathy. Using research from the fields of anthropology, psychology, animal behavior, and neuroscience, Frans de Waal brilliantly argues that humans are group animals.

Historia
In Your Dog Is Your Mirror, dog trainer Kevin Behan proposes a radical new model for understanding canine behavior: a dog’s behavior and emotion, indeed its very cognition, are driven by our emotion. The dog doesn’t respond to its owner based on what the owner thinks, says, or does; it responds to what the owner feels. And in this way, dogs can actually put people back in touch with their own emotions.

Tucked away in Siberia, there are furry, four-legged creatures with wagging tails and floppy ears that are as docile and friendly as any lapdog. But, despite appearances, these are not dogs - they are foxes. They are the result of the most astonishing experiment in breeding ever undertaken - imagine speeding up thousands of years of evolution into a few decades. In 1959, biologists Dmitri Belyaev and Lyudmila Trut set out to do just that, by starting with a few dozen silver foxes from fox farms in the USSR and attempting to recreate the evolution of wolves into dogs in real time.

More than 90 percent of dog owners consider their pets to be members of their family. But often, despite our best intentions, we are letting our dogs down by not giving them the guidance and direction they need. Unwanted behavior is the number-one reason dogs are relinquished to shelters and rescue groups. The key to training dogs effectively is first to understand why our dogs do what they do. And no one can address this more authoritatively than the diplomates of the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists.

Every dog lover knows the feeling. The nuzzle of a dog’s nose, the warmth of them lying at our feet, even their whining when they want to get up on the bed. It really seems like our dogs love us, too. But for years, scientists have resisted that conclusion, warning against anthropomorphizing our pets. Enter Clive Wynne, a pioneering canine behaviorist whose research is helping to usher in a new era: one in which love, not intelligence or submissiveness, is at the heart of the human-canine relationship.

Must Read for Dog Owners
This book is a must read!!! I enjoyed this book most so far. I have also read other books to try to understand dog behaviors, but this one was the best by far (even if is audible format versus the graphical/print version). I was able to apply the gained insight almost instantly. I do not know if this is related to my love for dogs and the ability and/or interest to understand them or credit for this book. I enjoyed the explanations of the brain chemistry which are just professional enough not to get lost but still understand their functions.
In my personal opinion 80% or dog related problems stem from handler problems one way or another. If you are interested in understanding your dog and some of his/her actions, the causes for these actions and possible treatments, this is a must read before you consult a professional dog trainer/behaviorist. Having read this book you will be able to discuss and professionally describe the (unwanted) behavior. You may also be able to create your own treatment plan to resolve problems before having to consult a professional.

This isn't a "fun" read...but it's almost essential for any fellow dog lover. I had to buy it on my Nook (don't tell Amazon I use a Nook) - to keep up with the pictures and stuff. But it's stuck with me (particularly since I have a few Psychology degrees and she uses behaviorism and social psychology a lot in her training...)

Absolutely loved!
At first I was a little taken aback by the softness of the narrator's voice, but it soon grew on me and was very enjoyable to listen to. This is an extremely insightful book, not only about the minds of dogs, but also of people and how we connect with our dogs. There is a mix of interesting, heartwarming, and at times perilous stories that correlate with the scientific aspect of the book. I learned much from this book and enjoyed it immensely. I highly recommend it, and I plan to listen to her other books soon.

Right on target
As a relatively new dog owner, I wanted a book that would give me some insight into my dog's behavior. This more than met my needs. It is charmingly written and very easy to listen to for over an hour at a time. Never boring, the author manages to include a lot of fairly technical science amidst charming anecdotes. The narration is flawless.

Needs photos!
Content is superb, as it always is from Dr. McConnell, however, the sudiobook version suffers painfully from the lack of the often-referred to photos. Please make this content available for download.
