Resumen del Editor

The first novel in Isaac Asimov’s classic science-fiction masterpiece, the Foundation series

The epic saga that inspired the Apple TV+ series Foundation, now streaming. Nominated as one of America’s best-loved novels by PBS’s The Great American Read.

For 12,000 years the Galactic Empire has ruled supreme. Now it is dying. But only Hari Seldon, creator of the revolutionary science of psychohistory, can see into the future - to a dark age of ignorance, barbarism, and warfare that will last thirty thousand years. To preserve knowledge and save humankind, Seldon gathers the best minds in the Empire - both scientists and scholars - and brings them to a bleak planet at the edge of the galaxy to serve as a beacon of hope for future generations. He calls his sanctuary the Foundation.

The Foundation novels of Isaac Asimov are among the most influential in the history of science fiction, celebrated for their unique blend of breathtaking action, daring ideas, and extensive worldbuilding. In Foundation, Asimov has written a timely and timeless novel of the best - and worst - that lies in humanity, and the power of even a few courageous souls to shine a light in a universe of darkness.

Not my cup of tea

Everything was done perfectly, but it couldn't hold my interest. My main problem with it is the timespan it covers and the lack of interest in the characters.

A Love Letter to Science and Scientists

Foundation is an idealized, almost utopian vision of human potential in the Age of Reason. Scientific thought is superior to outmoded, biased ways of thinking most people are stuck with, so the Foundation is always out-maneuvering its enemies. Nuclear power gives them technologies that are like magic. It’s all very nice to think about.

The problem with the book is that it’s barely a novel. There are characters, and there is a plot, but there’s no real tension, and the complications that arise don’t feel like complications but they’ve been predicted by the characters within. So the reader is just along for the ride, never fully invested.

Nevertheless, it remains a kind of key text in science fiction, so I’m glad I gave it a listen. The narration is well done.

Great and easy listen

StarWars-like era and very detailed conversations. More conversational than I'm used to. Less descriptive about setting. Not saying for better or worse just different. Great narrator as well.

Some Good Some Bad...1951 in 2020.

I've been listening to, mostly, Sci-fi/fantasy novels sice 2012. Some other classics like Twain. I'd not read anything by Asimov & always heard he was the master. Coming out of the early 50's you expect the Galaxy to be the Universe. No one ever got cell phones, unless you count Star Trek comms as flip phone's. Anyway, what really struck me is there wasn't a single female character in the entire novel/Galaxy/universe. Everyone is running around with atomic weapons. Hand weapons I mean. From your pistol to your shield to the engine on the ship it's all nuclear. Again, 1951, I wasn't expecting lasers> l.a.s.e.r's. But if you are a master of Sci-fi, make up an energy source for force sake! John Carter of Mars had some 7th ray of the sun... Anyway, what was good? Well, I actually had to Google a lot of this & I won't toss in any spoilers. First hyper space, first Galactic novel/trilogy, lot's of firsts here. So maybe we wouldn't have much of the material we have now w/o his early works. But... IDK... I downloaded the trilogy & now need a break before attempting to get through the other one's. Rereading Uplift series here I come!
** as the saying goes, no one wants to disprove Einstein! But don't just follow blindly. I would have liked an abridged version of the trilogy perhaps. Tell me what he pioneered & brought to sci-fi. Then the summary of the story. It's just not fun to read about a nuclear washing machine in 2020. My apologies.

Worth it.

The narrative is divided into 5 parts, each one decades apart with few, if any, returning characters between them. This necessitates an exposition dump at the beginning of each part, full of philosophical and political views and technobabble, but once you're over the hump the stories really shine. Scott Brick's narration is absolutely brilliant.

Exceptional Story, personal limitations

The book’s story is excellently crafted and incredibly interesting to listen to. Only because of past experiences or my own pre conceived notions did I find lines like “great space” silly and repetitive. If you don’t mind the rough edges of the book then it’ll be a 5/5 guarantee read and if you do mind those edges it’s still a 4/5 hell of a ride. All Hail the Galatia Spirit!

C-SPAN...in SPACE!

Do you love listening to smug characters drone on and on about political intrigue? If so, the Foundation has about 5 characters you'll love. They all display essentially the same personality and navigate a cataclysm via witty, charismatic machinations... in SPACE! I'm going to see this series through due to reputation and the fact that first books in a series usually are the worst book in the series just be forewarned, I had a hard time getting through this.

Dry

Don't get me wrong, I liked this book, and it's interesting to follow it through this wide period of time... It's just a bit dialogue-heavy for me, especially in audiobook format. I do feel the need to read the next book. Just, not, right away.
