The first novel in Isaac Asimov’s classic science-fiction masterpiece, the Foundation series

The epic saga that inspired the Apple TV+ series Foundation, now streaming. Nominated as one of America’s best-loved novels by PBS’s The Great American Read.

For 12,000 years the Galactic Empire has ruled supreme. Now it is dying. But only Hari Seldon, creator of the revolutionary science of psychohistory, can see into the future - to a dark age of ignorance, barbarism, and warfare that will last thirty thousand years. To preserve knowledge and save humankind, Seldon gathers the best minds in the Empire - both scientists and scholars - and brings them to a bleak planet at the edge of the galaxy to serve as a beacon of hope for future generations. He calls his sanctuary the Foundation.

The Foundation novels of Isaac Asimov are among the most influential in the history of science fiction, celebrated for their unique blend of breathtaking action, daring ideas, and extensive worldbuilding. In Foundation, Asimov has written a timely and timeless novel of the best - and worst - that lies in humanity, and the power of even a few courageous souls to shine a light in a universe of darkness.

More than just Sci-fi adventure

Absolutely excellent! I have never read nor listened to any of Asimov’s novels, but I am hooked. Scott Brick did an awesome job bringing the characters to life as well as capturing the wit of the author. I am saddened to learn that Scott Brick has only narrated the 1st 4 books in the series, and that the narration for books 5-7 is terrible by all accounts.
I do hope the publisher goes back and has Scott read the last 3 books, or enlists one of the many other talented narrators out there to set them straight.

An undying classic

It is astounding to note that Foundation was first released as a series of short stories starting in 1942. Having read the books as a teenager, I wanted a review as an adult - and Foundation is still amazing. An extremely good reading maintains the good image. Recommended to any science fiction fan of any age.

Story was great and the narration was good.

Had to take time to listen to this due to the recent release of Apple's Foundation Series. It wasn't portrait very near as it was in the books. This first book that I listened to seems to present a larger time span. It is a wonderful book. The details were sufficient to describe a galaxy spanning series of events. Can't wait to listen to the next book in the series. I highly recommend this book.

Disjointed story and bland narration

I don't get the hype around this book. While I find the concept of a story spanning centuries intriguing, this execution comes of as disjointed. Hard to get involved with the characters and gain an overview of the story segment with these kind of jumps.

The narration makes the story even harder to follow. He makes little to no effort to distinguish the different characters, which made following the various dialogues difficult.

Shows its age

Heard a lot about how amazing Foundation is but didn't expect how hidebound and attached to the "great man" (and only male) approach to history (or "psychohistory" it would be. It's almost campy in its cringyness. Performance was good though.

still a great story that holds up after 70 years

even after all these years foundation is a great story and still wonderful to listen to. I think I read this probably 40 years ago now to hear it on audible reminds me of all the different stories in the complete series. Scott brick has a good range of emotional capabilities but his lack of providing different voices makes it difficult sometimes to tell which character is speaking. I do recommend this as a great book to listen to.
