Publisher's summary

This is the concluding volume of the history of the IV SS-Panzerkorps, a relatively unknown organization that was born in battle during the last year of the war and fought exclusively on the Eastern Front. After their successful defense of Warsaw and the Vistula Front during the fall of 1944, the corps and its two famous Waffen-SS divisions, the Totenkopf and Wiking, as well as several divisions of the German Army, were sent south to reverse the military situation on the Hungarian Front. Follow General Gille and his divisions as they try to relieve Budapest against impossible odds, defend the tactically important town of Stuhlweissenburg, and fight in Germany's last major offensive, Operation Frühlingserwachsen. Learn how this SS tank corps, during the closing days of the war in Europe, fought massive tank battles, conducted grim rear-guard actions, and carried out night assaults against a numerically superior enemy who was determined to crush the Third Reich no matter the cost. After its failure to defend Vienna, the only course remaining for Gille and his men was a long and costly retreat, ending only with capitulation to the US Army and an uncertain future.

military History At Its Finest

What can I say? If you listened to this audiobook all the way through then you are a person who doesn't need me to pump up the story or say stupid things to arouse interest. I have listened to this audiobook and the one before it probably 3-4 times. Why? Because this topic has been a life-long interest. Put it this way - when I was a kid for probably 5-6 straight years my mom would help me to dress up like a Wehrmacht soldier for Halloween. you could get away with that crap back in the day. German military history is simply what I like to read about and listen to. Mr Nash has done a fine job with this series. I just hope the third audiobook comes out soon.

Incredible Detail

I knew almost nothing of the Budapest relief effort but now have a detailed understanding due to the incredible detailed account and analysis of this huge operation. I was under the impression that the German armies were totally falling apart in 1945, but this account shows how effective they could still be against an enemy superior in virtually all combat measures. If you like a detailed day by day battle analysis then you will probably find this account of interest to see how one of the final large battles of WWII developed.
