Terrifying on Several Different Levels

President-Elect Jonathan and his wife are preparing to take their roles as President and first lady. Their plans, their campaign promises, their faith, everything is called into question by Mister. Now they must decide whether their faith is right or wrong.

The author, Saxon Bailey, crafts a tantalizing thriller that challenges one’s faith in God and examines how that faith can be used to justify acceptance of all things—whether right or wrong—effectively absolving responsibility for disastrous outcomes. The narrative is thoughtfully constructed, with deliberate character and story development achieved primarily through engaging character conversations. While many people of faith may find this book offensive, the ending is the most satisfying aspect—unexpected and intriguing, even if not entirely believable. The political piece of this is reflective of the past few elections where fear-mongering, targeting specific audiences, and promises of extremism are prevalent.

Serving as the narrator as well, Saxon Bailey does an excellent job of conveying the fear, raw emotions, and struggles of each character as they come to their own conclusions. His clear delivery ensures the listener stays engaged, and while he doesn’t use distinct voices for most characters, he masterfully signifies when Mister takes control, offering a glimpse into Mister’s emotional and mental state. His steady delivery flows seamlessly with the narrative, enhancing the overall listening experience.

This captivating book is a powerful warning against the dangers of a religiously controlled dystopia enforced through government dictatorship-style leadership. This is terrifying on so many different levels as we see glimpses of this book throughout our everyday lives.
