Publisher's summary

The full, frank story of a remarkable life’s journey—to the pinnacle of success as a basketball player, icon, and entrepreneur, to the depths of personal trauma and back, to a place of flourishing and peace—made possible above all by a family’s love

Grant Hill always had game. His choice of college was a subject of national interest, and his arrival at Duke University cemented the program’s arrival at the top. In his freshman year, he led the team to its first NCAA championship, and three championship appearances in four years. His Duke career produced some of the most iconic moments in college basketball history, and Coach K proved to be a lifelong mentor. Later, as one of the NBA’s best players and a new face of the Detroit Pistons franchise, Hill was the first person with the potential to give Michael Jordan a run for his money, not just as a player but as a brand. His $45 million rookie contract was almost the least of it. He turned down Nike for Fila, and soon Method Man and Tupac Shakur were wearing his shoes.

Hill writes candidly about all of it, including the transactional impermanence of life in the league and the isolation caused by his growing fame. His parents and friends helped ground him, and eventually he met a gifted musician named Tamia. The love he found with her and the arrival of their two beautiful daughters would be his rock as a brutal and mysterious injury sidelined him, coinciding with his wife’s own serious health struggles.

With openness and insight, Hill relates his entire path, including post-career highlights like his Hall of Fame induction, co-ownership of the Atlanta Hawks, the directorship of the USA Basketball Men’s National Team, and even a yearly gig calling the Final Four. Hill’s father, Calvin, used to tell him that there were always a lot of reasons but never any excuses, and Game is a distillation of a lifetime’s effort to understand the reasons—the good and the bad. At his hardest moments, Hill sought out wisdom from others, stories of inspiration and overcoming obstacles. Now, with Game, he has returned the favor.

Critic reviews

“This detailed account gives readers great insight into Hill’s character and reveals a motivated and driven, yet honest and humble man who has emerged triumphantly and stronger after defeats, who’s clear about the goals and values he wants to live by. Even casual sports fans will find this autobiography inspirational and fulfilling. Highly recommended and essential for public and school library collections.” Library Journal

“[A] stellar account of [Hill’s] remarkable career. . . . Hoops fans shouldn’t pass this up.” —Publishers Weekly

“A fast-paced and reflective account of an extraordinary career in basketball. . . . [with] scores of memorable, sometimes iconic moments. . . . Hill writes affectingly of all the physical injuries he suffered while playing for four NBA teams, establishing a record of excellence in each. . . . An illuminating exploration of a demanding game by one of its greatest players.” Kirkus

GAME

GAME… let you know that everything’
In LIFE. Don’t Always Goes as Planned but No matter what you keep trying and Eventually you’re right your goal in Life. Grant Hill has been there and came back but no matter kept fighting until the end. I also appreciated that his Wife is The true meaning of a Ride or Die Chick. She never left his side through it all. That Black Love in Rare Form. Blessings Grant Hill and Family.

Well worth listening to!

I must admit that I met Grant Hill in an elevator at my educational institution in Mesa Arizona. And I must admit it was impressive. The second time I met him was at a restaurant in Scottsdale where he was dining with his daughters! He stood up and apologized about the loudness of his daughters! Not! Nevertheless we shook hands as I told him I worked for one of the Phoenix Sun’s physicians- he then stopped and told me how much he appreciated the medical team! This book is genuine—from the heart, Not so much about basketball- but more about life as a black athlete and as as husband & father! And about the importance of advocacy in politics! Thanks Grant! You made a difference!

Respect

Grant has an interesting story. I never knew all of the struggles he endured. He was a great player before the injuries and a really good player after, all in all I gained more respect for him listening to this Bio. Thanks Mr. Grant Hill

Greatness is Never muffled for to long

It’s hard being a Grant Hill fan when ur a UNC TarHeel lifer…. But Grant made it easy. Not only the talent we all came to love in 1990 vs UNLV, But the stand up guy he looked to be from afar as well as in this audio. I great read/listen to someone falling and getting back up.

Loved the journey.

As Afro American male in his 70’s who has watched but never played on any serious level, I was always curious about the true lives of some of the athletes I have watched over the year.
This autobiography more than satisfying in not only his medical struggles, but shedding light on college and pro basketball figures too.
Thank you to all who had a a hand in producing this audio book.

As a child in Southfield.

I cherished my days as a youth in Sfld, MI. But nothing put a capstone on the top seeing experiencing Grant Hill play. Having him relive those experiences through his perspective was not only refreshing, it was needed.

A powerful yet tantalisingly insightful production.

Feeling at home

This autobiography was refreshing. Unassuming and humble, this personal journey was authentic and true. Core values gave him the confidence he thought he lacked. Like most, he just had to find himself, his voice, on the court and off. We're all just ppl after all.

great, but not as good as grant the player

Good story. As a duke fan, love the Duke years. Parts a bit bland, but love it when authors read their own work.
