Story
Werner Herzog was born in September 1942 in Munich, Germany, at a turning point in the Second World War. Soon Germany would be defeated and a new world would have to be made out the rubble and horrors of the war. Fleeing the Allied bombing raids, Herzog’s mother took him and his older brother to a remote, rustic part of Bavaria where he would spend much of his childhood hungry, without running water, in deep poverty. It was there, as the new postwar order was emerging, that one of the most visionary filmmakers of the next seven decades was formed.

You might think that creativity is some mysterious, rare gift - one that only a few possess. But you’d be wrong. As John Cleese shows in this short, practical, and often amusing guide, it’s a skill that anyone can acquire. Drawing on his lifelong experience as a writer, Cleese shares his insights into the nature of the creative process and offers advice on how to get your own inventive juices flowing. What do you need to do to get yourself in the right frame of mind? When do you know that you’ve come up with an idea that might be worth pursuing?

Story
Faust is one of the pillars of Western literature. This classic drama presents the story of the scholar Faust, tempted into a contract with the Devil in return for a life of sensuality and power. Enjoyment rules, until Faust’s emotions are stirred by a meeting with Gretchen, and the tragic outcome brings Part 1 to an end. Part 2, written much later in Goethe’s life, places his eponymous hero in a variety of unexpected circumstances, causing him to reflect on humanity and its attitudes to life and death.

One of the most revered works in English literature, Great Expectations traces the coming of age of a young orphan, Pip, from a boy of shallow aspirations into a man of maturity. From the chilling opening confrontation with an escaped convict to the grand but eerily disheveled estate of bitter old Miss Havisham, all is not what it seems in Dickens’ dark tale of false illusions and thwarted desire.

In a remote Polish village, Janina devotes the dark winter days to studying astrology, translating the poetry of William Blake, and taking care of the summer homes of wealthy Warsaw residents. Her reputation as a crank and a recluse is amplified by her not-so-secret preference for the company of animals over humans. Then, a neighbor, Big Foot, turns up dead. Soon, other bodies are discovered, in increasingly strange circumstances. As suspicions mount, Janina inserts herself into the investigation, certain that she knows whodunit. If only anyone would pay her mind....

When he emerged he had under his arm a manuscript, a genre-smashing book about comedy, tragedy, love, loss, war, and redemption. When asked if this was the celebrity memoir, Norm replied, “Call it anything you damn like.”

Publisher's summary
Woody Allen's early comic fiction was heavily influenced by the zany, pun-ridden humor of S.J. Perelman. And now, for the first time, Woody Allen narrates one of his early collections of short stories, Getting Even. Listen to Woody Allen revenge himself on such significant subjects as death, obesity, organized crime, the invention of the sandwich, and much more.
Getting Even is a collection of seventeen of Allen's magazine pieces, discussing such eclectic topics as the invention of the sandwich, laundry lists, death, obesity, and, of course, rabbis. Here's Woody Allen as psychologist: "...death is an acquired trait."
Historian: "I did not know Hitler was a Nazi. The truth was, for years I thought he worked for the phone company."Philosopher: "I do not believe in an afterlife, although I am bringing a change of underwear."
Woody Allen’s short-story collections Getting Even, Without Feathers, Side Effects, and Mere Anarchy are available separately or together as part of The Woody Allen Collection.
Critic reviews
"Woody Allen brought modern comedy to the cinema screen." (Ricky Gervais)

Wonderful, Classic Woody Allen
What Monty Python has done for Christian lore, Woody Allen does for 20th century culture and Rabbinic Judaism. Delivered in Allen's classic droll deadpan style, these short essays are premised on subjects ranging from psychology, philosophy, 20th century literature and American history to Latin American revolutionaries, film noir and Rabbinic literature (midrash).
As in any type of humor, the more you know about the subject of the humor, the more you appreciate it--and Allen's adroit handling of his rather weighty subject matter is nothing short of brilliant.
While not absolutely essential, an at least cursory knowledge of the topics will add tremendously to the listener's enjoyment of Allen's remarkable talent in finding humor in what might otherwise seem rather humorless material.
This is one of the few books I can see myself returning to again and again whenever my spirits need a lift!

Get read for awkward stares...
Get ready for awkward stares on the subway, on the street, at a restaurant or wherever you listen to any one of the brilliant stories in the book.
Written in Mr. Allen's prime, the 70's, these stories would be hilarious if read by your tax accountant, much less by the witty neurotic performer that is Woody Allen.

This was ok, but I didn’t smile as much as I hoped
My mind wandered at times.
I like his quirky mind. Woody Allen was ok as narrator of the audiobook.
Genre: humorous thoughts

Beautifully Absurd
I think Allen has a dull brilliance to inspire younger generations and teach them well.

Allen in top form
Hard to find fault with this collection. Hard to pick a favorite. Maybe "Notes from the Overfed."

Can't beat Woody Allen!
5 Stars all the way! You can't beat this, Woody Allen reading his own words is just downright hilarious. Great pick up!

Bringing the average down...
Would you try another book from Woody Allen and/or Woody Allen?
Definitely. I have fond memories of Woody Allen from years ago. Unfortuntely, this book seemed uncontrolled, like the scrappy notebook of a man wresting with senility. There were very few moments where I laughed out loud, and only marginally more muted chuckles. There were some good bits though.
What could Woody Allen have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Not written it, and merge the few great bits into a different, better, book.
Which scene was your favorite?
Count Dracula, followed closely by Ernest Hemmingway
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
Woody Allen is a tremendous narrator. Although I found the stories meandering at best - meaningless at worst - I still enjoyed listening to Allen speak, purely because he has a wonderful voice.
Another redeeming quality is the fact that this is a collection of short stories, often no more than 5 minutes long. Although some made very little sense to me, the brevity meant that any one story only babbled in my ears for a few minutes. That said, there are two or three stories that I wish had been longer.
Any additional comments?
I got a much better experience out of the book when I boosted the speaking speed to 1.5x.
