In 2013 leert Nederland de flamboyante kapper en stylist Roy Donders kennen. Zijn reallifesoap Roy Donders: stylist van het Zuiden is een regelrechte kijkcijferhit. Hij maakt naam met zijn pailletten en harde krullen en verovert Nederland met zijn eigen huispakkenlijn. Ook treedt hij op als volkszanger voor bomvolle zalen en scoort hij hits met Patty Brard en Corry Konings. Roy is begin twintig en de wereld ligt aan zijn voeten.
In de jaren daarna verloopt zijn leven minder rooskleurig. Zijn kledingwinkel gaat failliet, zijn geliefde opa Kees en oma Nel overlijden en zijn relatie met Marvin loopt op de klippen. Als ook zijn carrière bergafwaarts gaat, belandt Roy in een donkere periode. Nooit eerder sprak hij over deze jaren: hele nachten zat hij aan het lachgas en vier flessen wijn per avond waren geen uitzondering.
Dan komt het nieuws dat niemand zag aankomen: Roys omgekeerde coming-out. Hij gaat samenwonen met zijn grote liefde Michelle, krijgt met haar dochter Romi en hervindt zijn levensgeluk.
