Resumen del Editor
Echoing among the Blue Ridge Mountains were the cries of newborn babies that disappeared into the night. The screams of children nearly drowned out by the sound of crickets. A girl, hidden and waiting to be found, terrified, and confused. The fireflies sparkling in the woods, bringing light to darkled places.
The bulk of Jesse’s memories were of growing up in the farm country of the Blue Ridge Mountains in North Carolina. The farm folks stayed pretty much outside of town, except for visits to the feed store causing random tractors to travel down Main Street. A large family struggles to survive the chaotic nature of the family head: their mother, a blend of rage, disappointment, and religious command. Her husband follows sheepishly behind, a monster of his own kind. There were beatings and abuses, manipulation and terror carried out in spaces breathtaking in their beauty.
And then there’s young Jesse: unwanted from conception but kept as a pawn for her mother’s bidding. Her life is a tale of growing up with no one to count on but herself.
A story of southern hills, a mother’s neglect, fireflies, kidnapping, birth, death, and the taste of sweet mulberries ripened by the sun. Jesse is a girl, hidden, who becomes a woman, discovered.

Historia
In the summer of 1928, sixteen-year-old Minka was looking forward to a sewing class picnic. This would be a rare chance to put aside farm chores, don a pretty dress, and enjoy an outing with other girls. It would be a day to remember. And it was - but not in the way Minka had dreamed. Cornered by a stranger in the woods, the young girl was assaulted. Minka still believed that the stork brought babies; she would not discover for months that she was pregnant.

In 1935, six-year-old Emily Evans vanishes from her family's vacation home on a remote Minnesota lake. Her disappearance destroys the family - her father commits suicide, and her mother and two older sisters spend the rest of their lives at the lake house, keeping a decades-long vigil for the lost child. Sixty years later, Lucy, the quiet and watchful middle sister, lives in the lake house alone. Historia
When Haven Kimmel was born in 1965, Mooreland, Indiana, was a sleepy little hamlet of 300 people. Nicknamed "Zippy" for the way she would bolt around the house, this small girl was possessed of big eyes and even bigger ears. In this witty and lovingly told memoir, Kimmel takes readers back to a time when small-town America was caught in the amber of the innocent postwar period - people helped their neighbors, went to church on Sunday, and kept barnyard animals in their backyards.

Historia
I was born and broken in Birkenhead, abused from infancy by a network of every kind of pervert from ‘thinks it’s love’ to ‘show it hurts’. I was unwanted, beaten, sold, swapped, photographed, filmed, left for dead, corrupted, blamed, betrayed, ignored and orphaned. But I was also born with a fire inside me. I call it my Phoenix Fire. I am no victim—that word only describes what happened to me. Nor am I a survivor because that implies I am over it. I am a Phoenix—a work in progress. This is my story....

Emily has always felt like an outsider, so when a family friend takes her under his wing she is delighted. But soon it becomes clear that his motives are not all they seem. At the age of 11, Emily is groomed into being a ‘county lines’ drug trafficker. It is the beginning of a vicious cycle that sees her become prey to one abuser after another, involving a huge child-sex-trafficking gang. The scale of the abuse—at the hands of hundreds of men—is sickening, and at times it feels like there will never be an escape. But then, in the darkest of moments, a ray of light shines....

Historia
Emily Smith was held in a prison of fear for 10 years. When she was four, her father left and a new man was brought into her life. He loved her, he kept telling her so, but the emotional and physical abuse she suffered at his hands were a daily nightmare. Until one day, after he crept into her bedroom, her life became unbearable. Emily found she was different in another way as her autism became more noticeable and punishments for her 'abnormal' behaviour more severe. Astonishingly, she managed to escape her home of hell, where she was abused right in front of her mother.

Unfortunately, abuse happens everywhere and can come in all shapes and sizes. Sometimes, it can happen right in front of us, and we still won't see it, or maybe, we just choose to ignore it hoping that one day it will go away on its own. This is my true story about living with a monster - a monster whom only those in my household would have ever had the unfortunate chance to meet. The monster I called my daddy!

Honest reflection & unwavering courage
Finished the story in a few days. Exquisitely written (style/format/vulnerability). The best summary I have is this: Jesse - Thank you so much for sharing your story & most of all, I am glad you are happy & safe.

The story is really good and engaging. BUT the amount of breathy up-speak done by the narrator made it extremely difficult to stick with.

Amazing "Hidden Gem"
I found this author on TikTok, and I immediately downloaded her memoir. It was even more heartbreaking and well written than I expected, but with an closing full of healing and hope. 10/10 recommend for anyone not easily triggered by mentions of SA and DV.

very good
I do prefer first hand accounting of people's stories but it was very good. they go back and forth in the beginning with the past and present so it's a bit confusing but the person Jesse is remarkable and a survivor. the mom is crazy. the dad could of made it better why didn't he? I was really angry with him. poor girl.

Heartbreakingly Stunning
This is the story of one of the most resilient, badass women I’ve ever had the absolute HONOR of learning about. From the beautifully delicate way Jesse was able to describe some magical moments among the truly horrific life she had been forced to live is such amazing contrast. Amazing read, 10000/10

Heartbreaking and Inspirational All At Once
This book was so touching and relatable for me. I highly recommend it if you're looking for a book to give a glimpse into the world of familial abuse. It is both truthful and at times unbelievable to think about the events described. I know the feeling of sexual, physical and emotional abuse, so I am intimately aware that these things happen, unfortunately far too often. The strength and bravery the author had in order to make this book possible must have taken a very long time to gather. My heart is there with Jesse, and I am so thankful for this book. ❤️

A book of great courage and inspiration!
I knew Jesse when she was a teenager. Her mother and I were friends. I witnessed some of the abuse she speaks of but was surprised it went so deep. I thoroughly enjoyed this book! Jesse is a "quality" human being and a survivor. I love her now and always will. I highly recommend this book for anyone who struggles to free themselves from the bondage of false beliefs and any kind of abuse...Good for you, Jesse!!
