Publisher's summary
#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • THE BLOCKBUSTER JACK REACHER SERIES THAT INSPIRED TWO MAJOR MOTION PICTURES AND THE STREAMING SERIES REACHER
“High-powered, intricately wrought suspense.”—Janet Maslin, The New York Times
New York City. Two in the morning. A subway car heading uptown. Jack Reacher, plus five other passengers. Four are okay. The fifth isn’t. And if you think Reacher isn’t going to get involved . . . then you don’t know Jack.
Susan Mark, the fifth passenger, had a big secret, and her plain little life was being watched in Washington, and California, and Afghanistan—by dozens of people with one thing in common: They’re all lying to Reacher. A little. A lot. Or just enough to get him killed. A race has begun through the streets of Manhattan, a maze crowded with violent, skilled soldiers on all sides of a shadow war. For Jack Reacher, a man who trusts no one and likes it that way, the finish line comes when you finally get face-to-face and look your worst enemy in the eye.
“Propulsive . . . [Child is] an expert at ratcheting up tension.”—Los Angeles Times
“Hold on tight. . . . This novel will give you whiplash as you rabidly turn pages. . . . May be [Lee Child’s] best.”—USA Today

Critic reviews
“The ever-resourceful and vengeful Reacher takes on nearly a score of the bad guys in an exciting climax to an enthralling book . . . complete with cover-ups and numerous intriguing twists.”—Library Journal (starred review)
“A superb New York novel . . . Child grounds his hero’s hard body and hard-drive brain in believable detail, and he sets the action against a precisely described landscape.”—Booklist (starred review)
“All good thriller writers know how to build suspense and keep the pages turning, but only better ones deliver tight plots as well, and only the best allow the reader to match wits with both the hero and the author. Bestseller Child does all of that in spades. . . . [He] sets things up subtly and ingeniously, then lets Reacher use both strength and guile to find his way to the exciting climax.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review)

Another Winner
For any fan of Lee Child's character Jack Reacher, it's pretty much impossible to not love any one of his books. In this book (the first one to my knowledge) Reacher acts as narrator of the story himself and it works well. Also, Child ventures into deeper literary territory in this book by bringing a geo-political backgdrop to the story. Reacher, as usual, is minding his own business when he gets mixed up in a plot that involves a long kept secret that is being protected by the DOD, the FBI, and a high-profile senator. The bad guys in this book? Al-Qaeda. Child delivers this plot successfully with strong research and some grueling realities of the world of terrorism. As expected, Reacher takes on this evil, abberant group with the same aplomb that he has with far lesser foes. Great book!

Reacher Is Back
After reading the distraction that was the previous Reacher novel, I am pleased to say the author has returned to the form that makes listening to a Reacher novel is so enjoyable. This time around, the story held my interest from start to finish with just enough plot twists to keep the listener guessing. From a Reacher influenced suicide on a New York Subway, to political intrigue, to a tale of terrorism that continues to plague us some eight years after the novel was written, Reacher keeps you glued to your listening device as he meanders through the storyline. I recently read a review that compared Reacher to Superman. While that is somewhat fitting, to me he comes across more like Batman. He is heroic, pragmatic, unyielding in his principals, and yet has the skills of good detective in getting to the root cause. And..unlike Superman and more like the Dark Knight, he is vulnerable even as he wins out in the end. As alway, Dick Hill delivers eloquently and makes the novel a joy to listen to. Here's hoping the next entry on the list delivers as well as this one does.

love Reacher not my favorite 'tho
Too much detail on Reacher's clothes. I understand that his lack of luggage is a way to understand his lack of ties to places and people. I don't think the details have to be plausible. My opinion only... I did not find the bad guys as interesting as prior books..but I did like portrayal of Senator and the backstory. I did like his coffee choice in the 4 Season tea salon. We should all have what we want when we can.

You need a strong stomach
This was probably my least favorite Jack Reacher novel.
The story revolves around an attempt to retrieve some classified information and you really do not know who the "good guys" and the "bad guys" are until about half way through the story. As usual Reacher is working on his own to try to find out what is really happening, but the story did not have the same satisfying feel for me that the other books had. First, some of Reacher's basic assumptions turn out to be completely wrong, second, I found the story line to be too much of a stretch for me and lastly, perhaps most importantly, I found myself literally unable to listen to parts of the story involving the description of a video and had to skip ahead. The Reacher books always involve some violence, but this is the first one I have read that was too graphic for me to be able to listen to.
Dick Hill's narration was as fine as ever and kept me listening even when I had given up on the story. I do recommend the book but without the strong recommendation I would give to most of the others. Personally I think Reacher is more in his element when working to uncover secrets in less urban areas where he is more on his own and not relying on the local police for whatever help they can provide, but that is probably just me.
