Publisher's summary

Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Literature, Margaret Mitchell's great novel of the South is one of the most popular books ever written. Within six months of its publication in 1936, Gone With the Wind had sold a million copies. To date, it has been translated into 25 languages, and more than 28 million copies have been sold.

Here are the characters that have become symbols of passion and desire: darkly handsome Rhett Butler and flirtatious Scarlett O'Hara. Behind them stand their gentler counterparts: Ashley Wilkes and Melanie Hamilton. As the lives and affairs of these absorbing characters play out against the tumult of the Civil War, Gone With the Wind reaches dramatic heights that have swept generations of fans off their feet.

Having lived in Atlanta for many years, narrator Linda Stephens has an authentic ear for the dialects of that region. Get ready to hear Gone With the Wind exactly as it was written: every word beautifully captured in a spectacular unabridged audio production.

Featured Article: The Best Historical Fiction Audiobooks

Often based on real people, events, and scenarios, historical fiction gives us the opportunity to learn about worlds and times we will never experience while introducing fascinating characters and stories set in their midst. Sometimes, the genre can even give us a peek into hidden storylines that routinely go unmentioned in traditional history books, showing us that those of ages past are perhaps not so different from ourselves.

Distraught the story is over

I loved the narration and the story kept me interested for all 50 hours. I think it's a mark of good writing when you can become so invested in such obviously frustrating and flawed characters and this book did exactly that.

My first review

Not just a reading, but truly a great performance by Linda Stevens. I can't imagine that it could be done better.

The classic and the best

It is as if Margaret Mitchell has written a book out of real people and how her writing is so beautiful. It truly is a lovely stories and at the end I cried so much. I wish I could meet a man like Rhett and not be a fool to not see that he is the man! Scarlet and Rhett are so real.

intriguing, involving

Would you listen to Gone with the Wind again? Why?

No; I just don't do that.

What other book might you compare Gone with the Wind to and why?

None come to mind

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Almost!!

Any additional comments?

If you are the sort of person who is opposed to reading Huckleberry Finn because of the use of the "N-word," move along; there's nothing to see here. For the rest of you: I do not read very much fiction; The Stand, Stand on Zanzibar; War and Peace; Moby Dick; certainly no modern fiction. But this book completely took me in. At about 42 hours, it's sure not a single-sitting book, but I rearranged my work so that I could listen as much as I could. The rich picture of US Southern culture, of its binding rules and duties is amazing. The characters -- there is a slight flaw there, given how much the plot must rely on dialogue (recall I don't read much fiction). But there is more psychology here than in Moby Dick. Interestingly, watching old movies growing up (I am in my 50's), I formed the same sort of opinion about slaves in the South that is presented here; that they were a kind of Greek chorus, who knew everything, but could do nothing. But in toto, an excellent piece, read with completely convincing characterizations.

Always a classic!!!!

I've always wanted to read this book, but time never permitted it. This finally gave me the chance to. I only wish Scarlett was available too.

Great as the movie

There are not many movies which are greater as the book. This book and the book are great. It was even wonderful to know the movie before the book. It was so much easier to give the people faces and still be deep in the story. Great performance! I hope everyone enjoys it as much as I did.

What a story. What a performance!

Much has already been said about the story and characters. However it was Linda Stephen's performance of the audiobook that greatly enhanced my enjoyment.

She gave all characters their own distinctive voice and accent, which is everything you can hope for as an audiobook reader.

The characters' thoughts and feelings were read aloud with the same feeling and emotion that was being conveyed. So you could hear the hurt, tenderness, and joy that the characters were thinking.

I nearly applauded when Linda broke out into song during one of the chapters. Thank you for bringing this wonderful story to life.
