About this listen

The best-selling adaptation of the iconic video game Halo: Combat Evolved featuring the Master Chief - part of the expanded universe based on the award-winning video game series!

It's 2552. Having barely escaped the final battle for Reach against the vast alien alliance known as the Covenant, the crew of the Pillar of Autumn, including Spartan John-117 - the Master Chief - and his AI companion Cortana, is forced to make a desperate escape into slipspace. But their destination brings them to an ancient mystery and an even greater struggle. In this far-flung corner of the universe floats a magnificently massive, artificial ringworld. The crew’s only hope of survival is to crash-land on its surface and take the battle opposing the Covenant to the ground.

But they soon discover that this enigmatic ringworld is much more than it seems. Built 100,00 years ago by a long-lost civilization known as the Forerunners, this “Halo” is worshiped by the Covenant - a sacred artifact they hope will complete their religious quest for supposed transcendence, and they will stop at nothing to control it.

Engaging in fierce combat, Master Chief and Cortana will go deep into the Halo construct and uncover its dark secret and true purpose - even as a monstrous and far more vicious enemy than the Covenant emerges to threaten all sentient life on Halo and the galaxy beyond....

Great book, narration is unnecessarily bad

I love this book. I listen to it non-stop for as long as I can. The issue I have is with the narration. Todd McLaren has a great voice, but some of the things he does incorrectly are such easy fixes that it screams laziness. This guy mispronounces EVERYTHING. How has no one told him how to pronounce words? It’s so infuriating to hear him butcher words that are so important like Mjolnir. Stuff that he should know like how it’s spartan ONE ONE SEVEN instead of one seventeen. If anyone who has played the game listened to his narration before it was released, every single problem could be fixed. That’s all it would have taken, one slightly competent reviewer to give some feedback.

A great addition to Halo CE

I loved the story but the reader mispronounced some words. the addition to Combat Evolved's story makes me appreciate the story so much more

well loved

This work, and the universe in which its tales are portrayed, are titans of nostalgia for myself and undoubtedly countless others. Thank you for the read.

Amazing book

Absolutely loved this book. Dives into so much more detail that it makes you replay the games. I have cruised through six books in the last 3 months. Gotta love the Master Chief.

Please learn to pronounce the words you read.

The story is good, if a bit repetitive. It is based completely on a game where you perform the same task over and over, so that can be forgiven.

What isn’t forgivable, is the narration. While most of the voices are….lackluster and inconsistent (even Master Chief’s voice changes throughout), it’s the pronunciation that bothers me;

-The “J” in Mjölnir is silent. It shouldn’t take multiple narrations to realize that.
-“HUD” is pronounced “hud”, not H-U-D.

Halo: Combat Evolved, the book

AMAZING. Fantastic rendition of the first Halo video game but with side stories on the covenant and Marines. Worth a listen.

Great story but...

Overall a great story! I loved that there was more in the book than the first game.

My biggest gripe with the audio book is the narrator’s pronunciation of words. You would have figured someone in the recording team would have caught his mispronunciations and corrected him or the narrator would’ve looked up the words he didn’t know.
