Ein einsamer Reiter stößt mitten in der Wüste zu einer Karawane und bittet, an ihrer Seite weiterreisen zu dürfen. Begegnen die Kaufmänner dem mysteriösen Fremden anfangs mit Misstrauen, nehmen sie ihn rasch in ihre Mitte auf und vertreiben einander die Zeit in der Wüste mit Märchen.
So führt die erste Geschichte in das Reich eines Kalifen, der einem finsteren Zauberer in die Falle läuft. Dieser verwandelt den Kalifen in einen Storch, um selbst die Herrschaft an sich zu reißen. Weiter geht es an der Seite zweier Schiffbrüchiger, die sich knapp vor dem Ertrinken auf ein zufällig vorbeifahrendes, scheinbar menschenleeres Schiff retten. Die Geschichte von der abgehauenen Hand erzählt von einem fahrenden Arzt, der in Florenz durch eine List dazu gebracht wird, einen Mord zu begehen und dem zur Strafe eine Hand abgeschlagen wird. Die Rettung Fatmes handelt von einem jungen Mann, der auf der verzweifelten Suche nach seiner in die Sklaverei entführten Schwester Freundschaft mit einem berüchtigten Räuber schließt. In der Geschichte vom kleinen Muck erfahren unsere Hörer vom naiven Muck, der auf einer ziellosen Reise in den Besitz zweier magischer Gegenstände kommt, die ihn jedoch in weitere Bedrängnis bringen. Das letzte Märchen handelt von einem Schneider, der meint, für Höheres bestimmt zu sein und es durch Zufall und Rücksichtslosigkeit an einen Königshof als vermeintlicher Prinz schafft.
Am Ende stellt sich heraus, dass es einen Zusammenhang zwischen einem Kaufmann der Karawane, dem mysteriösen Fremden und einigen der Märchen gibt.
