About this listen

In this stunning series debut from New York Times best-selling author Madeline Hunter, a duke's mysterious bequest brings fortune - and passion - to three young women....

Minerva Hepplewhite has learned the hard way how to take care of herself. When an intruder breaks into her home, she doesn't swoon or simper. Instead she wallops the rogue over the head and ties him up - only to realize he is Chase Radnor, the man who nearly got her convicted of her late husband's murder. Now, he's insisting that Minerva has inherited a fortune from his uncle, a wealthy duke. Only one thing could surprise her more: her sudden attraction to this exasperating man....

Chase can't decide whether Minerva is a wronged woman or a femme fatale. Either way, he's intrigued. Since the scandal surrounding her husband's death, she has set up a discreet detective business to rival Chase's own. She may be the perfect person to help him uncover the truth about his uncle's demise. But as proximity gives way to mutual seduction, Chase realizes he craves a much deeper alliance....

Very appealing characters

I loved the protagonists. Their love story was moving. This story had so much going on that it could have easily been much longer and more detailed. I also love having an epilogue, if the author doesn’t plan to continue their story in another novel. I’ve found that if you don’t like the narrator at first, over time, you become accustomed to their male voice and it sounds normal. Rosalyn Landor is so good, that other narrators have almost been ruined for me, but by the end of this book, the voices I heard fit the character.

Really good!

The story is fun. Narrator did a great job. I love her male voice! And her inflections are spot on. Right amount of spice. Just an overall fun romance!

Smart and interesting. Well written. Interesting and romantic. Intriguing characters with depth. Humor and seriousness used to flesh out the tale.

Heiress for hire

Great book about abused women who turns her life around back when women weren’t allowed to work.

A Young Woman becomes an heiress of a quixotic duke

A pleasure to read a well written and un anachronistic Regency romance novel with well developed characters and a plausible plot.

Who says romance isn't healing

It is rare for me to fall in love with a book this hard. The descriptions of what kind respectful intimacy is like after abuse is so well written here I cried. the story is engaging. the performance is also wonderful.

Lovely story, interesting characters

It took me a while to get into this book. The two leading characters were initially reticent...appeared to be reluctant participants. I loved the concept of commoner and nobleman and I especially liked that the commoner heiress was a strong and intelligent woman who stood up to the snooty noble aunts. The story line was a perfect blend of love, romance, intelligent repartee and a smidgen of mystery. This book sets the stage beautifully for next three books.

Enjoyable.

Interesting story not predictable or usual. A sensual romance with a murder mystery or two intertwined! Believable, real characters who are well developed, consistent, and show depth at surprising times. And will all that — there are times when they make you smile. Good writing, enjoyable listen.

Interesting. enjoyable story

This was a fun, delightful story. I found Chase a well written, deep character whose feelings were clearly articulated and believable. On the other hand, Minerva didn't make a lot of sense and I didn't feel like she cared for Chase like he did. Beverley Crick is a lifted narrator and her voice for Chase was really good.
