I

Walt sounded great. Very thrilling. Walt and Vic are bad asses and the books are nothing like the tv shows.

Snowy Peaks Sizzle

One of the best combos available. George Guidall is Walt Longmire.

He has the perfect voice and inflections for a weathered Wyoming Sheriff, who finds himself caught in a spring snowstorm, high in the Cloud Peak Wilderness area while trying to roundup a group of escaped prisoners. Craig Johnson's seventh book in the series tackles not only the unpredictable weather, but leads Walt on a journey mirroring that of Dante, substituting frigid temperatures for the warmer climates of hell. Walt's guide on his mystical trail is the grandfather of a murdered child, some thirteen years earlier, Virgil White Buffalo.

If you're looking for a cool read this summer, the frozen landscapes are sure to drop the thermostat a few degrees, but I'd call it the hottest listen of the summer.

This is my favorite so far!

Would you listen to Hell Is Empty again? Why?

Yes. The particular Johnson storyline of Walt Longmire as sheriff has an underlying spiritual theme to it.

What did you like best about this story?

The underlying spiritual theme to the story.

What does George Guidall bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

He helps pictures to develop in my mind by the description he gives to the scenes as well as to the characters.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When Walt discovered that the older Indian who had been with him on the trail to find the escapee had been dead for a while.

Straight to Hell...With Chaser.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

First of all, Mr. Johnson and his characterization, elegant prose and vivid metaphors of contemporary Wyoming/western is a reader's delight, similar to another artist of today's storytellers Mr. J.l. Burke and his passion for the Cajun Louisiana characters and culture. Safe to say that any reader would do well to grab themselves a cold one, a plate of crawfish and barbecue and turn up the volume on a Johnson or Burke audible player.

What did you like best about this story?

Walt Longmire is The Man peer ee ud!!!!! I think he comes closest to my all time overwestern figures and icons John Wayne. I found that Hell is Empty cemented Sheriff Longmire as a western super hero alongside The Duke. Qualifications for super hero: good guy devoted to eliminating evil, may bend but will not break, kicks all kinds of evil ass, yet maintains level of modesty, ladies swoon over super heroes, both good and bad, our super heroes all don uniforms, etc...PLEASE, feel free to add to this list.

What about George Guidall’s performance did you like?

George is Walt Longmire...further, he is one of my top narrators. Mr. Guidall can do it all.

Dark and Eerie

Who was your favorite character and why?

Longmire continues to attract me. He is complex and spiritual without being pretentious.

Which character – as performed by George Guidall – was your favorite?

Longmire and Henry

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Plot kept me there but it needed to be digested with each twist and turn so I liked it better as something to savor over time.

Any additional comments?

Craig Johnson has done well with this character. I like that he develops Longmire in each book and want more of Henry.

Every book in a series won't be great

Of the seven Longmire books I read, I found this to be the worst. The story borders on absurd—superhuman resolve and ghosts. Give us a break, please!

I will buy the next book in the series—As the Crow Flies—hoping Johnson returned to telling believable stories again.
