About this listen

Bronwyn MacArran was a proud Scot. Stephen Montgomery was one of the hated English.

He came to Scotland as a conqueror, saw her beauty, and was vanquished. But still she would abhor him.

She owned a temper hot enough to forge the armors of battle or inflame a valiant soldier's passion. Yet still she would resist him.

She became his reason to live, his reason to love. And still she would deny him.

But while clan fought clan, while brother took up sword against brother and the highlands ran with blood - their destiny was made...and this mighty warrior pledged himself to his woman's pride, her honor, and her name - and made of their love a torch to burn through the ages.

The story was marginal; the narration..good.

I read the first book in the Velvet series 'Velvet Promise" which was very good. This book is the 2nd in the series . I think the heroine's personality is what contributed to my lower rating. Her character seemed too abrasive and mean for my taste. The story and plot was well developed.

A Great Historical Romance

Would you consider the audio edition of Highland Velvet to be better than the print version?

I do enjoy the audio version more than the print due to the great narration provided by Gabra Zackman. Her Scottish accent adds to the narration and the humor of this original novel which I loved when originally published in 1982. Historical Romances stand up better than current day novels. Historicals are not impacted by current inventions like PCs, cell phones, smoking taboos, etc.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Highland Velvet?

My favorite moments of Highland Velvet occur when Bronwyn demonstrates her loyalty to her clan showing her strength of character, willing to sacrifice her love when necessary. I especially like her interaction with her future sisters-in-law.

Which character – as performed by Gabra Zackman – was your favorite?

Gabra's humorous portrayal of Steven Montgomery was my favorite often making me laugh aloud accurately interpreting Deveraux's characters.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

An epic Love Story.

Any additional comments?

Author, Jude Deveraux has been writing great love stories for more than 30 years and she continues today. I have been reading her books since her original book, Black Lyon. I am enjoying having today's narrators' interpretations of these classics. I hope eventually Audible.com will have all of her novels available.

Jude Devereaux is the best.

Her Montgomery Men are the best imperfect examples of good men in literature. After personal trauma, I had come to hate all the romances I had once loved. A friend I told about my lost enjoyment of Historical Romance told me I would love Jude and gave my my first Devereaux book to read, Velvet Angel. Her flawed, but good hearted Montgomery family helped heal my ravaged soul.

2 strong willed people in historical time of Scotland & England

Great chemistry among the 2 characters in Tumultuous Times in Northern England and Scotland. Beautifully described and very descriptive. A very pleasant way to spend a few hours on a snowy day.

Love this series, have read it many times.

The narrator is fabulous, the romance fun and a great escape from reality. Jude rules!
