A classic novel by John D. MacDonald with an exclusive introduction written and read by Dean Koontz. A Flash of Green tells the gripping story of small-town corruption and two people brave enough to fight back, featuring many of the themes John D. MacDonald explored better than anyone in his legendary career as a leading crime novelist. The opportunists have taken over Palm City. Silent and deadly, like the snakes that infest the nearby swamps, they lay hidden from view, waiting for the right moment to strike. Political subterfuge has already eased the residents toward selling out.

Everyone is always telling Stone Barrington that he’s too smart to be a cop, but it’s pure luck that places him on the streets in the dead of night, just in time to witness the horrifying incident that turns his life inside out. Story
My life was ordinary until three years ago when I was thrown out of a downtown hotel window. My name is Robbie Brownlaw, and I am a homicide detective for the city of San Diego. I am 29 years old. I now have synesthesia, a neurological condition where your senses get mixed up. Sometimes when people talk to me, I see their voices as colored shapes provoked by the emotions of the speakers, not by the words themselves. I have what amounts to a primitive lie detector.

Well, for one thing, Fred Fitch is the man with the most extensive collection of fake receipts, phony bills of sale, and counterfeit sweepstakes tickets in the Western hemisphere, and possibly in the entire world. For another thing, Fred Fitch may be the only New York City resident in the twentieth century to buy a money machine.

Jane Whitefield is a Native American guide who leads solitary outcasts through hostile territory to escape the vengeance of their enemies. But the shaded forest paths her Seneca ancestors might have followed on such missions have all been converted to superhighways, and now the safest way stations are crowded urban buildings that offer the camouflage of anonymity. Still, the supply of runaways - and the need for a woman who will take great risks to save them - have never been greater.

So far he's rid of the world of nobody who would be missed. But this time he finds himself zeroing in on the grieving family of a missing cheerleader. Lawrence Block's 17 Matthew Scudder novels have won the hearts of readers throughout the world - along with a bevy of awards including the Edgar, the Shamus, the Philip Marlowe (Germany), and the Maltese Falcon (Japan). But Scudder has starred in short fiction as well, and it's all here, from a pair of late-'70s novelettes ("Out the Window" and "A Candle for the Bag Lady") through "By the Dawn's Early Light" (Edgar) and "The Merciful Angel of Death" (Shamus), all the way to "One Last Night at Grogan's", a moving and elegiac story never before published.

Lawrence Block creates great characters.
I have read all of Block's Matt Scudder's books and never wanted them to end. Somehow he takes ordinary things and makes them interesting. He also includes some wry and enjoyable humor. The same is true of his Keller character. So many ordinary things in his life, despite his unusual occupation. And despite his line of work you feel he's a good guy. You wish him well. Leads me to believe Lawrence Block is also a good guy!

Not my idea of interesting...
I purchased this one based on the strength of its reviews, so I had great expectations. I was disappointed.
I finished the book, but found it to be disjointed. I never connected with the main character, found no suspense or mystery, and only considered it moderately entertaining. Basically, the hit man goes here and there doing his job and trying to "find" himself. I guess the "plot" of this book is the character development of the hit man, but since I never considered his character all that interesting, the book fell flat for me.

Didn't even warrant finishing.
I have only put down a couple of books in my life before finishing. This was one of them. I gave it a good shot, kept listening to see if it would improve and it just didn't. I was hoping for some interesting or inventive kills, a plot, something to warrant further listening. But it just wasn't there. Honestly one of the worst books I have every tried. I would recommend skipping this book.
