The four Gospels are foundational to Christianity. Yet Christian readers are often puzzled by the differences between the Gospels, preferring to harmonize the four into a single narrative. Now, this 24-part lecture course invites you to understand each Gospel's distinctive message. Along the way, you will examine theories about how the three Synoptic Gospels are related. You will also learn why the evangelists are symbolized by four living creatures: the man or angel, the lion, the ox, and the eagle.

Most scholars agree that the Gospel according to Mark is the earliest of the four canonical gospels. It is also the shortest, with swift dramatic turns throughout its fast-paced narrative. Because of its brevity, Mark's Gospel leaves many questions unanswered, and it has often been overlooked in the history of Christianity. As you will discover, though, Mark's Gospel is compelling in its combination of simplicity and sophistication. This audio course guides you through Mark's Gospel sequentially, offering you fresh insights and a deeper understanding of its overall shape.

The Gospel of Luke and Acts of the Apostles are two parts of a single triumphant work. Each an epic work in its own right, together they proclaim the gospel message and narrate the gripping story of the Church’s early days. Using the metaphor of a double helix, Fr. William Burton asks you to imagine Luke’s gospel and Acts as a single account with many parallels or rungs connecting the two sides of the twisted ladder.

Fulton J. Sheen - bishop, scholar, professor, radio and television personality, and writer - spent his life sharing the Word of God with millions of Christians across the world. One of his best-known works is The Life of Christ, written in 1954. This book explores the foretelling of Christ's birth, his life, temptations, death, and resurrection. But while Sheen himself was a scholar and an academic, his recounting is both listenable and accessible to the layperson.

No other book of the Bible has captured the hearts, minds, and imaginations of people through three millennia as vividly as Exodus. With stories of a prophet rescued from a basket on the river, the parting of a sea, and an entire nation wandering in the desert, this book seems made for the movies. Appropriately, some theologians have called the book of Exodus "the most important book in the Bible."

Whether taken as a book of faith or a cultural artifact, the New Testament is among the most significant writings the world has ever known, its web of meaning relied upon by virtually every major writer in the last 2,000 years. Yet the New Testament is not only one of Western civilization’s most believed books, but also one of its most widely disputed, often maligned, and least clearly understood, with a vast number of people unaware of how it was written and transmitted.

Resumen del Editor
Join acclaimed New Testament professor Ian Boxall, author of Discovering Matthew, to gain a deeper understanding of this remarkable Gospel’s shape and message. The Great biblical scholar Dom Henry Wansbrough notes that Prof. Boxall “has a talent for expressing profound and illuminating truths in a succinct and understandable form,” making him the perfect guide for this exploration.
The Gospel according to Matthew brings us in close touch with the Jewish origins of Christian faith. Rich in Old Testament quotations and allusions, it is keen to emphasize the continuity between Jesus’ life and teaching and Israel’s heritage.
Likely written as a foundation document for a community in transition in the early stages of separation from the wider Jewish community, this “Jewish Gospel” would also quickly become “the Church’s Gospel.” Its clear structure; fuller narrative of Jesus’ birth, life, death, and resurrection; and memorable record of Christ’s teaching indicate that it was the early Christians’ go-to Gospel for public reading, catechesis, and theological disputation.
In 15 compelling audio lectures, you’ll explore Matthew’s distinctive portrait of Jesus. Prof. Boxall will guide you from the Gospel’s fascinating opening genealogy to its climactic Great Commission. Along the way, you’ll explore topical questions pertinent to Matthew’s story: its memorable and challenging Sermon on the Mount, its multilayered healing stories, its interest in Peter and the Church, and its surprising teaching about judgment.
Reseñas de la Crítica
“Ian Boxall is one of the brightest and most incisive of younger British Catholic New Testament scholars. Before being head-hunted for Catholic University, Washington, he taught with distinction for some years in the theology faculty of Oxford University. He has a talent for expressing profound and illuminating truths in a succinct and understandable form.” (Fr. Henry Wansbrough, O.S.B., Liverpool Hope University)
“Ian Boxall is well known as an outstanding scholar on all areas of the New Testament....He has captivated his students at the University of Oxford and The Catholic University of America over many years now.” (Nicholas King, S.J., University of London)
“Dr. Boxall has an excellent record of research and publication on the reception history of the gospels. He has a deep understanding of the biblical text and a broad knowledge of how it has been interpreted through the centuries. Furthermore, he has earned a reputation as an exceptionally gifted teacher able to effectively communicate his accumulated knowledge and wisdom.” (Dr. David Bosworth, The Catholic University of America)
