Publisher's summary
A torso in a suitcase looks like an impossible case, but Sean Duffy isn’t easily deterred, especially when his floundering love life leaves him in need of a distraction. So with detective constables McCrabban and McBride, he goes to work identifying the victim.
The torso turns out to be all that’s left of an American tourist who once served in the U.S. military. What was he doing in Northern Ireland in the midst of the 1982 Troubles? The trail leads to the doorstep of a beautiful, flame-haired, twentysomething widow, whose husband died at the hands of an IRA assassination team just a few months before. Suddenly Duffy is caught between his romantic instincts, gross professional misconduct, and powerful men he should know better than to mess with. These include British intelligence, the FBI, and local paramilitary death squads - enough to keep even the savviest detective busy. Duffy’s growing senseof self-doubt isn’t helping. But as a legendarily stubborn man, he doesn’t let that stop him from pursuing the case to its explosive conclusion.

Story
Northern Ireland, spring 1981. Hunger strikes, riots, power cuts, a homophobic serial killer with a penchant for opera, and a young woman’s suicide that may yet turn out to be murder: on the surface, the events are unconnected, but then things—and people—aren’t always what they seem. Detective Sergeant Duffy is the man tasked with trying to get to the bottom of it all. It’s no easy job—especially when it turns out that one of the victims was involved in the IRA but was last seen discussing business with someone from the loyalist Ulster Volunteer Force.

Fegan has been a "hard man" - an IRA killer in Northern Ireland. Now that peace has come, he is being haunted day and night by 12 ghosts: a mother and infant, a schoolboy, a butcher, an RUC constable, and seven other of his innocent victims. Story
Two years ago, a hostile Prime Minister launched the Monochrome inquiry, investigating "historical over-reaching" by the British Secret Service “to investigate historical over-reaching.” Monochrome’s mission was to ferret out any hint of misconduct by any MI5 officer—and allowed Griselda Fleet and Malcolm Kyle, the two civil servants seconded to the project, unfettered access to any and all confidential information in the Service archives in order to do so. But MI5’s formidable First Desk did not become Britain’s top spy by accident, and she has successfully thwarted the inquiry at every turn.

The story opens with the apparently accidental drowning of a sixth form student in the Norfolk countryside. As a matter of routine, or so it seems, the case passes across the desk of Detective Sergeant Smith, recently returned to work after an internal investigation into another case that has led to tensions between officers at Kings Lake police headquarters. As an ex-DCI, Smith could have retired by now, and it is clear that some of his superiors wish that he would do so.

Story
After moving from a small country town to Seattle, Heather Baxter marries Tom, a widowed doctor with a young son and teenage daughter. A working vacation overseas seems like the perfect way to bring the new family together, but once they’re deep in the Australian outback, the jet-lagged and exhausted kids are so over their new mom. When they discover remote Dutch Island, off-limits to outside visitors, the family talks their way onto the ferry. But as soon as they set foot on the island, which is run by a tightly knit clan of locals, everything feels wrong.

Story
Fegan has been a "hard man" - an IRA killer in Northern Ireland. Now that peace has come, he is being haunted day and night by 12 ghosts: a mother and infant, a schoolboy, a butcher, an RUC constable, and seven other of his innocent victims. In order to appease them, he's going to have to kill the men who gave him orders. As he's working his way down the list, he encounters a woman who may offer him redemption; she has borne a child to an RUC officer and is an outsider too.

My favorite line in my favorite song about Dallas goes like this: Dallas is a rich man with a death wish in his eyes / A steel and concrete soul in a warm heart and love disguise... The narrator of Jimmie Dale Gilmore's perfect tune Dallas" is coming to town as a broke dreamer with the bright lights of the big city on his mind. He's just seen the Dallas cityscape through the window of his seat on a DC-9 at night. Is he just beginning his quest?

Story
The story opens with the apparently accidental drowning of a sixth form student in the Norfolk countryside. As a matter of routine, or so it seems, the case passes across the desk of Detective Sergeant Smith, recently returned to work after an internal investigation into another case that has led to tensions between officers at Kings Lake police headquarters. As an ex-DCI, Smith could have retired by now, and it is clear that some of his superiors wish that he would do so.

So entertaining
Adrian McKinty is one terrific writer. He.creates memorable characters, interesting mysteries and witty dialogue. I really love this series since I knew nothing about the Troubles prior to reading The Cold Cold Ground. It is bit of a history lesson wrapped up in a great story.

The quality of thought, and expression is fine and finely wrought.
A terrific, complicated, exciting and touching story, a terrific narrator, a great character in Duffy, and unbelievably beautiful writing. Belfast and the Troubles are living characters in this book like San Francisco is a character in Vertigo. This is a wonderful book. This is a wonderful series. I find it hard to believe I didn’t find McKinty before this.

Duffy!
I like these books despite not knowing all the truth about how the Troubles actually looked. The writing is at times a little...I don't know...there are rich details about character and setting, but I would love to know more about the procedures Irish cops have to go through to get a warrant etc.
I will stick with this series!

Atmospheric, tense, and deeply satisfying.
The Irish accent is the icing on this fantastic treat. Another McKinty masterpiece of detective fiction, Detective Sean Duffy struggles to survive while walking the line between good and evil in Northern Belfast during the Troubles.

It couldn’t have happened to a nicer bloke!
I love McKinty’s books. I have one last Duffy to read (Gun Girl) and I’m done with all of his adult books. I liked the Forsythe books too. There is just something so loveable about the poor buggar. I’m looking forward to hearing more about Emma and the wee bairn, so hopefully, he will get writing and update us. But all in all, I love the story lines. I lived and worked in London (lived up the road from the Woolwich Barracks and The Arsenal (1971-1991) during all of these events and I feel as if I know the likes of Gerry Adams and The IRA, Sin fein, RUC, etc. and of course Mrs Thatcher (the lady is not for turning!) I heard The Star pub bomb go off from my top floor Blackheath flat. It is so plausible the way he weaves historical events into his work.
I truly felt bad for (Sergeant) Duffey in this one.
5 stars on all of your books Adrian and keep them coming! ALSO, don’t ever let anyone else narrate! Doyle does a marvelous Belfast and Ulster accent and he is the only male narrator I I know who does a convincing Irish female voice. BRAVO 👏
