Publisher's summary

When In Our Time was published in 1925, it was praised by Ford Madox Ford, John Dos Passos, and F. Scott Fitzgerald for its simple and precise use of language to convey a wide range of complex emotions. It earned Hemingway a place beside Sherwood Anderson and Gertrude Stein as the most promising American writers of the period.

In Our Time contains several early Hemingway classics, including the famous Nick Adams stories "Indian Camp", "The Doctor and the Doctor's Wife", "The Three Day Blow", and "The Battler". It also introduces listeners to the hallmarks of the Hemingway style: a lean, tough prose, enlivened by an ear for the colloquial and an eye for the realistic that suggests, through the simplest of statements, a sense of moral value and a clarity of heart.

Now recognized as one of the most original short-story collections in 20th-century literature, In Our Time also provides a key to Hemingway's later works.

Great but...

I have always loved this collection and Mr. Keach is perfect for this. The music interludes were a bit out of place, I thought, but by the end I was used to them.

FANTASTIC!

I've always love the outdoors, because of stories Hemingway wrote of the Nick Adams stories. Good work Mr. Keach.

Nice!

Interesting how it jumped around so much. Nick was the main character, yes? also, was the solemn music nessecary?

Another winner

More proof that there is absolutely no one like Hemingway. I doubt there ever will be. The performance by Stacy Keach was masterful.

Glad to have listened, but not my favorite.

I enjoyed Hemingway's early work. At times it reminded me of Bukowski. There were some very moving short stories.
Unfortunately, I didn't think the narration suited Hemingway's writing. It sounded a bit like William Shatner reading a young adult novel.
Also, while the music between the stories was nice, I found myself growing impatient as it seemed to go on for too long sometimes. There's no need to bulk up an audiobook with music.

However, I'm still happy to have listened since I would not have had the time to read it.

Excellent pairing of author and narrator

Hemingway has always seemed to me a writer whose subjects appeal more to men than women, yet no one can describe death in such moving yet sparse sentences.

A marvelous narration

I never tire of listening to Hemingway when narrated by Stacy Keach.
He is by far the best narrator for any author and I tend to enjoy whatever book read by him, but Hemingway most of all.

Simpler Times

Detail, flow, pace, word selection and usage, character development, scene descriptions — everything was magnificent — as we have come to expect from Mr. Hemingway — and ENJOY!!

Unabridged reading by Stacy Keach

This is a great reading by Stacy Keach of Hemingway's first book. Audible is listing this as Abridged (as of March 2011, they may correct it later) but it is actually complete with all of the 16 short stories and the 16 vignettes as in the printed Scribner editions.

in that time

Having recently watched the 6 hour Ken Burns special on Hemingway, several titles I had not read came to my attention. This one was identified as one of his best.
It's very enjoyable and I expect to come back to it repeatedly in the future. Some if the stories are less than a minute and many have characters that reemerge throughout the book. Bull fighting, horse racing and life growing up in a simpler time.
The read by Stacy Keach is excellent and overall this book was very enjoyable.
