Publisher's summary

Daniel Leary is Cinnabar's most successful space captain; his friend, Lady Adele Mundy, is its most efficient spy - but they've got their hands full as they face:

  • A Cinnabar Senator furious at losing an election - and still powerful enough to make her anger deadly
  • The boy ruler of a star cluster who thinks he's a god - and who can sign the death warrants of even Cinnabar officials if a mad whimsy tells him to
  • A world of slaves and escaped slaves, where the most savage beasts in the jungle used to be human
  • An enemy base that could shrug off attack by powerful battlefleets - but which must fall to a single cruiser if Cinnabar is to survive

From palace to reeking jungle, from gunfights in grimy hangars, to the flagship's bridge during a sprawling space battle, Leary and Mundy are in the thick of it again. Watch the galaxy explode In the Stormy Red Sky.

BONUS AUDIO: Includes an exclusive introduction written and read by author David Drake.

this is my third time reading this series

it's one of those things I love to do is redo the RCN series. Each time I listen to the books I find something new that I missed in the past.

    Fun Stories, Sometimes Too Graphic

My only complaint is the unnecessarily gory descriptions. The stories are formulaic, but still enjoyable and interesting. The characters have character. The reader is very good, mastering multiple voices, with great pronunciation and enunciation.

An extraordinary tsle of action and gallantry

A well performed and well paced tale of naval action, intrigue and gallantry that engages you from beginning to its dramatic outcome. For those who have followed these series this will be the most satisfying escalation of the depth and scope of their main characters development.

    A wonderful listen!

    Any additional comments?

So far this is my favorite book in the RCN series. The book is full of Drake's characteristic blend of political intrigue and edge of your seat space battles. If like me the workings of the matrix have perplexed you, this edition to the series contains an explanation of bubble universes that will have you thinking "ah I finally get it".

While listening to this book I laughed out loud and the scene when Miranda visits Adele brought tears to my eyes (personally the most powerfully emotional scene in the series thus far). With Daniel's well deserved promotion and the disgraced Senator Fobes tagging along for the ride, fans of the series won't be disappointed.

Despite David Drake's insistence to the contrary in the forwards of the previous books, I highly recommend listening or reading them in order. It's the only way to really understand the complex way the characters have grown throughout their careers in the RCN.

    -Chris
P.S. If you enjoy the RCN series, I think you will also like "Fire with Fire" and "Trial by Fire" by Charles Gannon. Both have are a similar well written politically driven scifi with complexly developed characters

    Excellent Continuation of the Series

I have been listening to their series in order of release. I have enjoyed this book as much as all the previous entries and look forward to listening to the next one.

    Not what I expected

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

not necessarily. Characters we have come to enjoy with a moral attitude we respect are suddenly everyday humdrum like our leaders and politicians, takes the fun out of the book.

What could David Drake have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

more action with less political statements

What three words best describe Victor Bevine and David Drake ’s voice?

acceptable, too soft in some areas (but I'm 75 so my hearing is not what it used to be.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

    no

    Any additional comments?

just not what I expected. Not sure if it was worth the money!

The rest of the series is much better

I REALLY liked all of the other books in this series, so I was excited when Audible listed this book. It was a major disappointment. The opening chapter was good. The closing chapter was great. The rest of the book was mediocre. The reader had a very nice voice but it was poorly suited to the material. In the heat of battle, the narrator read as if he were reading a script for the History or Discovery channels.
The major problem I saw with the book is that David Drake seems to have become too enamored with the world he has created and there is too much minutia. For example, I really don't care that when a rigger comes in from the rigging that the metal connectors under the fabric of his suit show frost. I hope he gets back on track with this series because I liked the other books
