Publisher's summary

Soon-to-be college freshman Evie Claremont had hoped that once she'd arrived on Crestwood's campus, the nightmare that she'd been having would go away. It hasn't. She may be an inexperienced 17-year-old, but she's grounded... sane. She looks for rational explanations to even the strangest circumstances. Since meeting sophomore Reed Wellington, however, nothing makes any sense. Whenever he's near, she feels an attraction to him - a magnetic kind of force pulling her toward him.

Unfortunately, Reed acts as if Evie's the worst thing that has ever happened to Crestwood...or him. But for some reason every time she turns around he's there, barging into her life. What is the secret that he's keeping from her? Evie's hoping that it's anything but what she suspects: That he's not exactly normal...and neither is she. So, maybe Crestwood won't be the making of her, but it could be the breaking of her. Evie's now left to wonder if the dark future her dream is foretelling is...inescapable.

Entertaining

The narrater for this book was great. She does a fantastic job. As for the story I wasn't thrilled with it. But it wasn't because of the writing (which was great).

Wow!

Typically I don’t like YA stories BUT, I fell in love with these characters and I the story line was great! While it held elements of Twilight, it was very different! It also had twists that I turned the story in directions I would not have predicted! I’m looking forward to the 2nd book!

Good story. Horrible narration

Story is very fun. Performer was atrocious. Almost unbearable for me to listen to. Monotone for the most part and inaccurate inflection and tone. Pathetic, really. Rudd does other Bartol books and is much better. This is a second rate B level performer.

A Good Listening Experience

Evie's story is a nice mixture of mystery and fantasy adventure. It reminds me of the books that I enjoyed as a teenager and young adult. I enjoyed the characters and the as they got in and out of various predicaments. It was fun to listen as these young people tried to maneuver through life and adulthood. The performance was very good and the story was a nice, light mystery listen that kept me listening; without having to burn too much brain power in order to keep up.

Fantastic

I had read this book previously and liked it so I thought I’d check out the audible version...

Wow!!! It was a great book to begin with but Emily Woo Zeller was
Insanely good as the narrator.
Her voice was so pleasant and fragile and powerful...she created a world of flesh and blood characters with her voice.
When Evie was sad or grieving her voice trembled and spoke with such realism.
She never overplayed anything and her male characters were so distinct and the dialogue between characters flowed effortlessly, giving voice to each characters feelings and point of view. She is so gifted!
Yes the story is amazing too!!

One of my favorite book series. I'm on my 4th or 5th time listening to it. I've read the series once. Love these books!

Excellent narration by Emily Zeller!

I collected this one originally on my Nook but switched to collecting the series in Kindle e-book and Audible audiobook formats. It’s also a series that I committed to buddy reading with my pal Loraine.

Ratings:
Overall ★★★☆☆
Really it was the audiobook performance that hooked me. That and the fact that I collected all 5 books prior to starting my binge read.

Performance ★★★★★
Emily Zeller is fantastic! She has great acting skills, and I love all the different voices she does. Her female and male voices are equally good which is always a relief for my ears.

Story ★★★☆☆
As an introduction to this paranormal world, it was good. There were some charming moments and a bit of humor thrown in with all the slow world building. I really liked Evie with Reed, so my favorite moments involved him. The twist was a good one, and it took me by surprise.

On to the next one which is book 2, Inescapable!
