Publisher's summary

Delta Force—the US Army’s most elite top-secret strike force. They dominate the modern battlefield, but you won’t hear about their heroics on CNN. No headlines can reveal their top-secret missions, and no book has ever taken readers inside—until now. Here, a founding member of Delta Force takes us behind the veil of secrecy and into the action to reveal the never-before-told story of First Special Forces Operational Detachment-D (Delta Force).

He is a master of espionage, trained to take on hijackers, terrorists, and enemy armies. He can deploy by parachute or arrive by commercial aircraft, survive alone in hostile cities, speak foreign languages fluently, strike at enemy targets with stunning swiftness and extraordinary teamwork. He is the ultimate modern warrior: the Delta Force operator.

In this dramatic chronicle, Eric Haney, one of the founding members of Delta Force, takes us inside this legendary counterterrorist unit. Here, for the first time, are details of the grueling selection process—designed to break the strongest of men—that singles out the best of the best.

With heart-stopping immediacy, Haney tells what it’s really like to enter a hostage-held airplane. From his days in Beirut, he tells a remarkable tale of bodyguards and bombs, of a day-to-day life of madness and beauty, and of how he and a teammate are called on to kill two gunmen targeting US Marines at an airport. As part of the team sent to rescue American hostages in Tehran, Haney offers a first-person description of that failed mission that is a chilling, compelling account of a bold maneuver undone by chance—and a few fatal mistakes.

From fighting guerrilla warfare in Honduras to rescuing missionaries in Sudan and leading the way onto the island of Grenada, Haney captures the daring and discipline that distinguish the men of Delta Force. Inside Delta Force brings honor to these singular men while it puts us in the middle of around-the-world action that is sudden, frightening, and nonstop.

Narration a little weak

I guess I'll be the first one to say it - I'm a tad disappointed in the narration. I have listen to many books in Audible and the one common denominator, for me anyway, is that books that are narrated by the author are so much more compelling than those that are "professionally" narrated. I don't know if Audible books have a Director to guide the narration, but if they do, he/she failed on this one. Such a good story to be told - would have been better for me to read this book than listen to it.

Excellent book!

I'm not sure how anything I say about this book can convey the thanks and appreciation I feel toward the author and other Delta Force members for living the lives with which to write it.

The audio was engaging, the material very insightful and interesting.

Again, thank you to the author, his comrades, and their supporting families for your service to our country; even when those self-serving people were putting the lives of people greater than themselves on the line for their own selfish, arrogant pride.

I have recommended this book already to family and friends. It's been great discussion material.

Excellent Book!

I got interested in the book from watching the TV Series “The Unit”. It did not disappoint. Excellent audio book, Haney did yeoman’s work with the reading. The content was great and the writing was top notch. Just wish I had the time to actually read the book. Highly recommend this audio book to anyone.

Haney & Delta Force.

A great book on the experience of a soldier. Her doesn’t shy back on critiquing where he thinks the leaders erred in sending soldiers needlessly in harms way.

Great job on the audio version. You will develop a sense of respect and admiration for these guys that go in hotspots giving their lives for their country.

Truly enjoyed

From selection to retirement the book was fascinating.

Haney's words about the future and Islam seemed right on the money.

A great archive of the early days of DELTA

The author discusses a common theme heard amongst many SF units that can be heard from the early days of DELTA and also from the Tier 1 units of today. However, he does get into a deeper depth of what makes a DELTA man what he is as a person and a soldier. Along with some different details of older operations that were performed. My favorite part was the selection course, but I was surprised at the depth of the operations as well. They almost bridged between spy and soldier in some cases. A good book to listen to for the foundations of DELTA.

Great Book

The author gives an in-depth look at being a member of Delta from the beginning. Does talk about missions but gives and in-depth look at the training required.

Fantastic story, fantastic delivery!

The book itself is absolutely captivating! It was difficult to stop listening, however there were times where I actually had to go on with my daily life! Perhaps the most poignant part of the book was the epilogue where you see the true wisdom of the author. I highly recommend this book.
