Resumen del Editor

Self-determined 15-year-old Becky lives a cozy, idyllic life with her grandma in a small northern town.

Inspired by the numerous crime films she's watched on television, she's convinced that she could carry out a successful robbery and get away with it.

At school, Becky overhears the other girls talking about getting summer jobs, and her ears prick up after hearing she could be assigned a temporary national insurance number until her real one comes through. This information spurs Becky into action. If she could get a summer job under an assumed name, and disguise herself so that no one would recognize her, it would be like a dress rehearsal for a crime, just to see if she could get away with it. Becky set about ordering what she needed from her grandma's catalogue, explaining that she needed a wig for the school play.

Becky manages to secure herself a summer job at Carter's bakery under the assumed name of Alice Brown. This is her first introduction to the workplace, and she finds herself under the watchful eye of passive-aggressive, middle-aged supervisor Thelma.

Becky settled into her role as Alice Brown, and this was the total extent of her criminality, but as she was now working in the payroll department, she couldn't help observing the comings and goings. She knew the exact time when the money was deposited in the safe, and how long Thelma (who was a creature of habit) would be on her lunch, and then she saw Thelma putting the combination of the safe into her drawer. So now, the opportunity was presenting itself. Would Becky risk losing everything just to prove that she could commit the perfect crime?
