Kate Savage Should Narrate All

My only disappointment was that Karen Savage did not narrate ALL the stories! I would listen to anything read by her. She is a treasure.

Jane Austen with a Yankee accent?

There are readers, and there are storytellers. These ladies are readers. Perhaps I judge harshly, or perhaps the competition is just too stiff. After listening to Emma Thompson narrate "Emma," listening to this was just painful. And her narration of "Northanger Abbey?" One can truly hear Austen's voice. Billy Piper narrating "Mansfield Park": a true pleasure. However, this selection sounds like an 6th-grade language arts class.... Okay. I hate to be snarky ... like 11th grade English lit. But kudos to the ladies on this selection for putting themselves out there. Maybe they should study those other great storytellers and pick up some of their tricks ... like immersing themselves into the story completely. Then, maybe their US accents wouldn't be so jarring.

Readers of varying quality

The stories are amazing; that goes without saying. Elizabeth Klett is an excellent reader, and Karen Savage is an absolute rock star. Moira Fogarty is decent as a reader, but she made lots of small mistakes of pronunciation, and word substitution that alter the meaning of certain scenes in Persuasion. If someone listening has not first read the text of the book, they might be confused at times. The pity of this is that as Karen Savage already has a stellar *free* recording of Persuasion available elsewhere. As all of the recordings of Klett and Savage used in this collection are their free Librivox recordings, I don’t understand why Savage’s Persuasion was nit chosen instead. The collection would then end on a high note.
