Publisher's summary

These never-before-published interviews with Jerry Garcia reveal his thoughts on religion, politics, his personal life, and his creative process. Jerry on Jerry provides new insight into the beloved frontman of the Grateful Dead in time for the 50th Anniversary of the band. Released by the Jerry Garcia family and made available to the public for the first time, these are some of the most candid, intimate interviews with Jerry Garcia ever published. Here, Garcia speaks openly about everything from growing up in the San Francisco Bay Area and his first encounters with early R&B to his thoughts on songwriting, LSD, the Beats and Neal Cassady, government, movies, and more. Illustrated with family photographs, ephemera, and Jerry's artwork, Jerry on Jerry presents uniquely poignant, unguarded, and astute moments, showing a side of Jerry that even his biggest fans have not known.

The Best!

A+ to every feature of this book! Absolutely loved it! To hear Jerry tell all these stories gives me a nice cozy and warm feeling. He is quite closely my favorite musician that ever lived.

if you are a dead head you'll dig it

some things drag a bit. I wish there was more content about song writing etc. but still very cool to go in the mind of Jerry and listen to his discussions.

It's Just Jerry Being Jerry

This Audiobook was an absolute no brainer to me. I am a huge Grateful Dead fan and have always found that Jerry Garcia was so much more than just a musician. The only downside to this is that the audiobook is only 5+ hours, in some cases I find it annoying to spend a credit on short books. This is such amazing material that the 5 hours flies by and it is just a fleeting feeling knowing it's going to end.
I especially love listening to Garcia just go off into different subjects, he is so relatable and is maybe the most down to Earth celebrity who actually talks to people not down to people. He doesn't act above any topic. I started listening to the Grateful Dead 10 years after Jerry Garcia died and I still feel a connection to him and understand what the man was about.
10/10 I would love if they release more of these interviews or any type of Grateful Dead Audio books. Thank you to his family for letting his fans be included to this Grate book.

"Jerry on Jerry" says it all!!

don't normally review anyting because of time constraints or just the fact that I'd rather someone find out on their own instead of being colored by other people's opinions on how good or bad anyting really is. Because as we all know everything is relative.

A big shout out to McNally for getting this out of the family archives and into the general public's hands in the manner that he did. This book as the author says consists of mainly wraps between Jerry and some friends, family, and a few interviewers. But mostly very informal conversations that were highly enlightening about what or who Jherry Garcia might have been like as a person....outside of my personal worship of a hero.

It's also the reminder how sad it is that he's gone, but at the same time there did seem to be joy in Jerry's life outside of all the reported negativity surrounding his darker moments with H. Also some opinions rendered about his thoughts on some serious topics including some individuals within the greater GD family...not just the typical PS that you read from other media sources Never judgemental.

It seems that most of the raps that you hear are coming from a perspective of sobriety, but not all. but who really cares about that since it was obviously a part of Jerry's life and it's integration into Jerry Garcia ultimately as a musician and as a person.

I could go on but my recommendation for what it is worth would be to get your hands on this ASAP. I think there might be some accompanying artwork from Jerry and some other items included, bj I have not taken a look at yet. For those looking to hear from Jerry's mouth what motivated or moved this man... not to mention his heroes and why they have had such a big impact on his life... this book should be a no-brainer. No issues on the reader is bc mostly it is Jerry speaking with groups of friends and or family. No other GD musicians dialecting either except Bobby in the prelude. And it ends as quickly as it starts!!

Good To Hear Jerry's Voice!

Although I'm a bit younger than the average Deadhead, I've been devoted since the late 1970's. I read Dennis McNally's book, A Long Strange Trip (*****), and learned a lot about both The Dead and the curtural history of the 1960's. I initially purchased Jerry on Jerry in hardcover but went on to purchase the Audible version after discovering that Jerry was listed as a "narrator". The actual recordings of the previously unpublished interviews are used in the Audible recording and Dennis McNally does a great job of guiding the listener/reader through the content. If you're a Deadhead, you'll enjoy this book in either format.
I took Refuge (Buddhist/Tibetan culture) many years ago and know that receiving teachings by "direct transmission" (from the voice of a living teacher) is the best way to learn. It may seem strange to the uninitiated but very often our "teachers" are those we see in daily life. As a result, I count Jerry among the best of my teachers (in this life time) and wonder: Has anyone looked for his Reincarnation?

Great Audio book for Deadheads!

I’ve read and learned about the Grateful Dead from many sources, but to hear it in Jerry Garcias own voice was particularly special. McNally has a conversational style of interview and as a listener, I felt like another friend just hanging out in the room enjoying the tales being told. 5 Cat Under The Stars Rating.
