Mostly Great!

I was bummed at first when the narrative actor switched, but Mr. Smith has grown to be my favorite rendition of the pithy, ostentatious Heir Cabal.
I like all of these shorts; and like the author, often prefer short story anthologies. The Long Spoon would be my favorite in this case-5*. The rest are between 3&4.5. Definitely worth the listen.
It was ideal for me, as a realtor, to be able to enjoy one of my favorite anti-heroes single adventures all in a days intermittent work. And the. Again the next!

A Fine Writer and Narrator

Emulating the Victorian style of English fiction is tricky at best, especially for modern audiences. Mr. Howard does an extremely fine and entertaining job of it. His characterizations are extraordinary, and as much as a cad as the protagonist is, Johannes Cabal, you can't help but root for him.

The narrator, Mr. Smith, makes this audio book extraordinary. I have added another narrator to my list of favorite readers. The list is now up to six.

Thank you Audible for making this collection of short stories available in the Plus Catalog. I will now go find his full length books.

so sad to finish it!

I adore these books! The narration is wonderful, the stories compelling and wry. Zarenia is my spirit devil...a highly recommended listen.

Everything You Imagined

These stories are beautiful on their own, but hearing them elevates them beyond simple words.

Crazy entertaining

I have listened to two other Cabal novels, the full length novel varieties. I usually avoid short stories but these were so good.

Good fun

I really enjoyed this audiobook. It combines my favorite things: biting British humor, the occult/supernatural, and a hero (or rather, antihero) who is rarely without a plan B, C, or D. I think the Bone Wind was my favorite story, both for its unusual creature and the fun “defend the house” plotline. Narrator is excellent, he gives different flavors to all the characters, but you don’t even notice he’s there.

Love Cabal

enjoy the stories and the dry sarcasm. I prefer the longer novels, but this was fun.

pure delight

I REALLY enjoyed this book. Accents and voices are On Point. more importantly the storyline is so embedded with the main character's psychopathy that you never know for certain which way the story will turn. It drops tropes like dropped mics.

Lovely collection of stories

Highly recommend if you enjoy a darker Sherlock with a twist of fairy and a dash of devil.

Great fun for short term bursts.

I'm not usually a fan of short stories. The author explains that he grew up being a fan of the format during his forward. He must have learned some great lessons from those short stories of his childhood; this collection is great.
