Publisher's summary

Journey to the Center of the Earth is one of literature’s earliest works of science fiction. It vividly animates a fantastical subterranean world as an intrepid crew, led by the eccentric Otto Lidenbrock, traverses the planet’s core and its various bizarre obstacles: giant mushrooms and insects, a herd of mastodons, prehistoric humans, a treacherous pit of magma, and more.

Tim Curry, narrator of the customer favorite A Christmas Carol, returns for an encore performance that delivers a range of distinct character voices and captures the energy and enthusiasm of a time when scientific exploration was a brand new adventure.

Editorial reviews

Noted geologist Professor Liedenbrock discovers a cryptic message hidden in the pages of an ancient volume purporting to show the way into the center of the earth. Liedenbrock determines to make this fantastic journey, insisting his 16-year-old nephew, Henry, accompany him. Tim Curry handles the verbal pyrotechnics of Verne’s classic adventure, capturing the sardonic wit and droll observations of 16-year-old Henry. Writing in 1864, when explorers such as Burton, Stanley, and Livingstone were charting the earth’s geography, Verne created the fantastical geography of the world below based on current scientific fact. With breathtaking surety, Curry’s performance takes listeners from Germany to Iceland to the bowels of the earth and back, providing humor and clarity.

Featured Article: The top 100 classics of all time

Before we whipped out our old high school syllabi and dug deep into our libraries to start selecting contenders for this list, we first had to answer the question, "How do we define a classic?" The answer isn’t as straightforward as you might guess, though there’s a lot to be said for the old adage, "You know it when you see it" (or, in this case, hear it). Of course, most critically, each of our picks had to be fabulous in audio. So dust off your aspirational listening list—we have some amazing additions you don’t want to miss.

Great story

Lots of exposition but that’s on par for the times of when it was written. Fell in love with all the characters by the end.

Not for Everyone (Review contains spoilers)

Jules Verne is the OG "hard" science fiction guy. He wants to be consistent with scientific thinking at the time (or at least, what his readers might suppose or acquiesce to be scientific thinking at the time) and to explain in detail how the adventure is carried out. This means that we spend a long time before we are even below the Earth, with glacial 19th century travel methods, and when we arrive sub terra, we spend most of our time descending caves, being stuck in caves, etc. [Spoilers] We never even get to the center of the Earth.

I read this book when I was young (middle school) and loved it a lot. The first time I tried to write a novel, it was a sequel to this (I was mad that they never made it to the center, and wanted to fix it). It's not really much of a draw now, given all the way cooler and more dramatic (and diverse) sci fi out there. It remains a draw, however, to those who want to experience the early stages of speculative fiction or, like me, to relive a childhood favorite. But I wouldn't recommend it to most people.

Tim Curry makes it go down well, but he's not given a whole lot to work with, dialogue not being Verne's strong suit.

Best Told Story I've Heard

I own several audio books and there is none that I have listened to more than this version of Journey to the Center of the Earth.
Tim Curry is a master storyteller, breathing life and soul into the characters and each aspect of this Verne classic.

Great except the Main Character is a douche

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

If you like science expeditions, goofy old professors or adventure/discovery tales, this is totally up your alley. If not then I'd suggest you give it a shot anyway cause you might change your mind.

a great classic, I listen to it over and over

Every time I listen, I hear something new. Classic Jules Verne. Very realistic, going deeper and deeper into an old volcano to reach the center of the earth.

Starts off slow, but Tim Curry is great!

When I read this book in text format, I just skim the first 30-40 pages. Unfortunately, it's a bit harder to do that in an audio book. However, Tim Curry is a great narrator and he does a fantastic job with the adventurous parts in this text.
