Cleo Stays Focused, and So Does This Series

In Kingdom of Lies, Cleo returns from the war zone to continue the Queen Trials at the Rotunda. There are new twists, unexpected turns, and a few intriguing new characters to learn about. This book stays true to the tone of the series, and I mean that in the best way possible. The characters continue to develop in meaningful ways, and I find them getting better with each installment. One of the standout changes in this book is Cleo’s ‘mother,’ who becomes a much more interesting character—one who finally seems poised to take a more active role in helping Cleo achieve her end goal.

I was initially worried this series might veer into a typical romance storyline, but it has stayed refreshingly focused. Cleo remains laser-focused on her mission, making allies and enemies along the way while continuing to learn more about the world she’s fighting to change. She doesn’t waste time crying over her past or getting distracted by a love interest in the middle of a life-or-death crisis. Instead, she stays selfless, determined, and hopeful throughout, which makes her a fantastic protagonist to follow.

I do wish the author would fill in more of the world’s history and lore, but I’m hopeful that will come with time—either in future books in this series or in her other works, which I’ll definitely be reading as soon as I finish this one. I’m officially a HUGE fan.

If you’re looking for a light, fast-paced, and highly entertaining read, this is a great choice. It has a Selection Series meets Hunger Games vibe (leaning more toward The Selection), but with a slightly darker edge. Despite the high stakes, the story remains upbeat, with Cleo focused on her goal: killing the king and saving the other princesses—whether they realize they need saving or not.

I also love the unique voice of the main character, and the author does an excellent job narrating. Highly recommend!

Cliffhanger after cliffhanger

I love that I’m always left on the edge of my seat, I hate that I have to wait for book 6!
