En Forêt-Noire, la dernière chasse a commencé... Et quand l'hallali sonnera, la bête immonde ne sera pas celle qu'on croit. Le commandant Pierre Niémans et Ivana Bogdanovic, électron libre de la PJ, sont saisis d'une enquête sur le meurtre d'un riche héritier souabe, Jürgen von Geyersberg, castré et décapité, et dont le corps a été retrouvé en Allemagne. Le duo part à l'assaut de la Forêt-Noire, sur la piste de la Pirsch, chasse mystérieuse qui semble être la clé du mystère. Peu à peu, ils multiplient les rencontres étranges - prêtresse des eaux thermales, éleveurs de chiens, guérisseur -, et surtout les Chasseurs noirs, bataillon de criminels enrôlés par Himmler pour traquer les Juifs, qui semblent d'un coup avoir jailli de leurs tombes...
Cette plongée dans une expérience extrême et terrifiante, où la violence côtoie l'ésotérisme, marque le retour du célèbre commissaire Niémans des Rivières pourpres.

I felt flushed, excited and ready for the rest of my life with the man I loved. We race to get on the train home. It screams to a halt and I run towards its open doors. Made it. I think he’s right behind me — but when I turn around, he’s gone.
