About this listen
“Lush, engrossing and full of mystery and dark magic" (BookPage), Labyrinth's Heart is the thrilling conclusion to M. A. Carrick's Rook & Rose trilogy, in which a con artist, a vigilante, and a crime lord become reluctant allies in the quest to save their city from a dangerous ancient magic.
May you see the face and not the mask.
Ren came to Nadežra with a plan. She would pose as the long-lost daughter of the noble house Traementis. She would secure a fortune for herself and her sister. And she would vanish without a backward glance. She ought to have known that in the city of dreams, nothing is ever so simple.
Now, she is Ren, con-artist and thief. But she is also Renata, the celebrated Traementis heir. She is Arenza, the mysterious pattern-reader and political rebel. And she is the Black Rose, a vigilante who fights alongside the legendary Rook.
Even with the help of Grey Serrado and Derossi Vargo, it is too many masks for one person to wear. And as the dark magic the three of them helped unleash builds to storm that could tear the very fabric of the city apart, it's only a matter of time before one of the masks slips—and everything comes crashing down around them.

Once, there were four worlds, nestled like pages in a book, each pulsing with fantastical power and connected by a single city: London. Until the magic grew too fast and forced the worlds to seal the doors between them in a desperate gamble to protect their own. The few magicians who could still open the doors grew more rare as time passed and now, only three Antari are known in recent memory—Kell Maresh of Red London, Delilah Bard of Grey London, and Holland Vosijk, of White London.

Story
Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders. But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away...because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them. With fewer dragons willing to bond than cadets, most would kill Violet to better their own chances of success.

The Catenan Republic—the Hierarchy—may rule the world now, but they do not know everything. I tell them my name is Vis Telimus. I tell them I was orphaned after a tragic accident three years ago, and that good fortune alone has led to my acceptance into their most prestigious school. I tell them that once I graduate, I will gladly join the rest of civilized society in allowing my strength, my drive, and my focus—what they call Will—to be leeched away and added to the power of those above me, as millions already do. As all must eventually do.

Vanja Schmidt knows no gift is freely given, not even a mother’s love. Abandoned to Death and Fortune as a child, she has scraped by as a lowly maidservant with her quick wits and the ability to see her godmothers’ hands at work in the world. But when they demand her lifelong servitude in exchange, Vanja decides that gifts not given freely...can always be stolen. A wicked retelling of “The Goose Girl", Little Thieves is a delightfully witty YA fantasy about the fickle hands of fate, and changing the cards we’re dealt.

As an orphaned child, she fled with her sister, Alice, from their charlatan aunt Bellefonte, who wanted only to exploit Tabby's gift so she could profit from the recent craze for seances. Now a young woman and tragically separated from Alice, Tabby works with her adopted father, Eli, the kind caretaker of a large Boston cemetery.

You define life or it defines you. In Shawn Speakman’s case, it was both. Lacking health insurance and diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2011, Shawn quickly accrued a massive medical debt that he did not have the ability to pay. That’s when New York Times best-selling author Terry Brooks offered to donate a short story that Shawn could sell to help alleviate those bills—and suggested he ask the same of his other writer friends. Unfettered is the result: An anthology built in order to relieve that debt, featuring short stories by some of the best fantasy writers in the genre.

Nahri has never believed in magic. Certainly, she has power; on the streets of 18th-century Cairo, she’s a con woman of unsurpassed talent. But she knows better than anyone that the trades she uses to get by - palm readings, zars, and a mysterious gift for healing - are all tricks, both the means to the delightful end of swindling Ottoman nobles and a reliable way to survive. But when Nahri accidentally summons Dara, an equally sly, darkly mysterious djinn warrior, to her side during one of her cons, she’s forced to reconsider her beliefs.

Now, they are both rising stars in the new regime, despite backgrounds that couldn't be more different. Annie's lowborn family was executed by dragonfire, while Lee's aristocratic family was murdered by revolutionaries. After the old gods warred and drove themselves to extinction, the cataclysm of their fall shattered the land of Vigrio. Now, power-hungry jarls carve out petty kingdoms, and monsters stalk the shadow-haunted woods and mountains. A world where the bones of the dead gods still hold great power, promising fame, and fortune for those brave - or desperate - enough to seek them out. As whispers of war echo over the plains and across the fjords, fate follows the footsteps of three people. All three will shape the fate of the world, as it once more teeters on the edge of chaos.

Gahd, I love these books
This is the last in the trilogy and does it mean that. Every. single. plot thread gets woven into a neat knot by the end. And that includes ones I wasn't even aware were there.
It took awhile for me to finish because so much happens. This is an incredibly dense book and I bet the Author could have split it between 2, but I'm glad they didn't.
My only complaint is that the character Sedge never actually gets to do anything, and I think that applies to the whole trilogy.

A Fantastic Series
Absolutely love this series! I love the twists and turns and how complex the lies get, I love knowing things that the characters don't and waiting for them to put it together. I loved watching as the lies started to fall apart and character's worlds came crashing down around them. I loved the narrator and how she does such a fantastic job of bringing the characters to life with different accents. It made Ren's character feel more real and her ability to fool people into thinking she's someone else more believable. I don't think that just reading this book would have the same magic as the narrator is able to bring to it - Nikki Massoud does a fantastic job.
I hope that M.A. Carrick are able to come together to write some more in the future! I love all of the details they are able to slide in and make the world feel so immersive.

One of my new all time favorite series
I'd give it more than 5 stars in every category if I could.
Don't know where to start - everything about this series is awesome!
The world building is masterful - such detail about so many different groups and belief systems.
The characters are deep and conflicted, along with being caring and courageous.
And the narrator - Nikki Massoud... She is incredibly talented! She does at least 30 different voices and they are SO good! I can't imagine the time she must have spent figuring them all out and keeping them straight. She the best I've ever heard and I have been listening to Audio books for over 10 years.
This is a new twist on fantasy, magic and challenges.
I highly recommend this series.

great narration!
I loved the character arcs and interactions in this series but the fantasy aspect of the story was just not my cup of tea. I didn't really understand it or care for it. Also some of the political subplots and side characters were too hard to keep track of. This might be worsened because of the audio format and the use of foreign words in the story. I couldn't tell for the life of me what each of the foreign vocabulary meant by the end of the book. Anyway, I think my favorite book in the story was book 1, where most of the story line was about human interaction and the con aspect of the story, before all the fantasy started. I really wanted this to be a 5 star for me, but I just wanted to get through and finish the book.

The story itself was entrancing!! Literally!

Love this series!
I’m an avid listener always looking for something fresh. I listen to all the mainstream books everyone loves and raves about. This series is better, great world building with complex characters who grow SO much throughout the series. I’m going to miss these characters like I’d miss a dear friend. I don’t write reviews, this series was worth writing a review.

One of my favorite series/narrators EVER
Bittersweet finishing the series, I love the books and all the characters. Master level of world-building. The descriptions and plot twists, with not a single thread left untied which I appreciate. IMHO nothing is worse than ambiguous endings.
Also, bravo to Ms Massoud. With all the names and accents, this is a difficult book to narrate but she truly brought the characters to life, somehow coming up with ~20 different distinct voices. She clearly put a lot of time and effort into the performances.
Lastly, it’s super refreshing to have a happy ending. The trend in fantasy has been to obliterate half the cast for shock value and make everyone’s stories as tortured as possible which gets disingenuous quickly. Lovely to read a story with good arcs with no gratuitous use of violence.
