Editors Select, October 2017

Walter Isaacson, one of the most celebrated biographers of our time, is probably the only person who could successfully tackle a biography of the utterly complex, enigmatic, and misunderstood Leonardo Da Vinci; in fact, you could say that Da Vinci is the Steve Jobs of the 15th century (smile if you get it). Half jokes aside, Isaacson does an incredible job of melding Da Vinci the man with Da Vinci the artist, scientist, and inventor. Though it sometimes seems as if Dan Brown deserves credit for the recent cultural fascination with the Renaissance artist, Isaacson will surely be credited for unearthing Da Vinci’s past in a scholarly yet manageable manner. Narrator Alfred Molina's rhythmic and smooth delivery makes this work all the more accessible. —Laura, Audible Editor

Resumen del Editor

The author of the acclaimed best sellers Benjamin Franklin, Einstein, and Steve Jobs delivers an engrossing biography of Leonardo da Vinci, the world's most creative genius.

Leonardo da Vinci created the two most famous paintings in history, The Last Supper and the Mona Lisa. But in his own mind, he was just as much a man of science and engineering. With a passion that sometimes became obsessive, he pursued innovative studies of anatomy, fossils, birds, the heart, flying machines, botany, geology, and weaponry. His ability to stand at the crossroads of the humanities and the sciences, made iconic by his drawing of Vitruvian Man, made him history's most creative genius.

Now Walter Isaacson brings Leonardo da Vinci to life, showing why we have much to learn from him. His combination of science, art, technology, and imagination remains an enduring recipe for creativity. So, too, was his ease at being a bit of a misfit: illegitimate, gay, vegetarian, left-handed, easily distracted, and at times heretical. His relentless curiosity should remind us of the importance of instilling, in both ourselves and our children, not just received knowledge but a willingness to question it - to be imaginative and, like talented misfits and rebels in any era, to think different.

Fascinating insight into a fascinating man.

Loved it. Absorbed from beginning to end. Thanks to the Isaacson for his exhaustive research. I can't imagine reading all Da Vinci's scribbly notebooks in Italian mirror script and understanding the many topics presented.

A great book and a very wonderful presentation.

This book is amazing. While I did get a bit lulled into boredom over the nuances of the painting styles and what 'expert'' opinions have been over time, the discussion of his mind and interests more than compensated. I enjoyed the more vertical look here, rather than traditional horizontal biographies.

Leonardo magic in the best voice

The way Alfred Molina reads Walter Isaacson, transports you to the medieval times, and found yourself next to Leonardo, found yourself beside the master and the rhythm of the story makes it a very good entertainment.

Intriguing, but Dense

This book was interesting and I am incredibly glad that I I purchased it. However, the material is somewhat dense so those expecting a historical fiction book will likely be disappointed by the detailed analysis of da Vinci’s journals that comprises the bulk of the book. That said, if you are looking for a good nonfiction book, I highly recommend.

some issues with voice

I loved the book, but Alfred Molina's voice was difficult to hear at times. I don't feel he is right voice for the material.

More art history extravaganza than biography

This work probably is better as a book than as an audiorecording. The performance is excellent; Alfred Molina does a wonderful job with the material. What surprised me - and not necessarily in a good way - was that the book spent a lot of time analyzing DaVinci's paintings rather than discussing general life during the Renaissance. The recording comes with a PDF of images of DaVinci's work and some locations. The problem is that if you're listening to this in the car or while you're walking, you can't refer to the image being discussed. The discussion of the artworks take up about a third of the recording's running time, so it can be a little frustrating at times. Still, it was good to hear the history and learn more about who Leonardo was as a human being.

Engaging and entertaining

This book was amazing. I have always had a hard time getting into biographies but this one was amazing. The details that the author goes over on the life of da Vinci are fascinating and will keep your interest chapter after chapter. This is a must read for anyone even mildly interested in the arts or art history.

The accompanying pdf is absolutely needed.

When listening to this audio book, please make sure you download and have available the accompanying pdf file. I think the magic of the book is on the research and description explaining the many graphs in the pdf file.
