Story
In one year Julia Sweeney got a divorce (amicable), bought a small bungalow in Hollywood, and looked forward to a life that said, "Here dwells a happily single young woman!" But then the axe fell. Her younger brother, Mike, was diagnosed with terminal cancer and moved in with her. Her parents came to be with Mike and moved in with her, too. Julia was now on seriously intimate terms with the people she had spent half a lifetime growing up away from.

Inspired by her research for the hit podcast Ultra, Rachel Maddow charts the rise of a wild American strain of authoritarianism that has been alive on the far-right edge of our politics for the better part of a century. Story
Even though a growing number of Americans don’t believe in god, many remain reluctant to say so out loud. Kate Cohen argues that not only is it rewarding for those of little faith to announce themselves, it’s crucial to our country’s future. As she details the challenges and joys of fully embracing atheism—especially as a parent—Washington Post contributing columnist Kate Cohen does not dismiss religion as dangerous or silly. Instead, she investigates religion’s appeal in order to explain the ways we can thrive without it.

Today, Seth is a liberal and secular humanist. This audiobook explores the Fox News culture, which both reflects and informs American conservatism, shaping public opinion on important issues like religion, government, race, foreign policy, war, protest, LGBT rights, and the Constitution.

Few books in history have been as poorly understood as the Qur'an. In this audiobook, the distinguished historian of religion Bruce Lawrence shows precisely how the Qur'an is Islam. He describes the origins of the faith and assesses its influence on today's societies and politics. Above all, he emphasizes that the Qur'an is a sacred book of signs that has no single message. It is a book that demands interpretation and one that can be properly understood only through its history.

Editorial reviews
Publisher's summary
Equally comedic and insightful, Letting Go of God is Sweeney's brilliant one-woman show about her struggle with her faith. Grappling with the seeming contradictions in Adam and Eve, Noah, the Ten Commandments, and even the teachings of Jesus - and trying to understand the Bible's messages about morality, family values, and human suffering while faced with door-knocking Mormons and wise-cracking priests - Sweeney takes listeners on her very personal journey from God to "not-God".
This performance was recorded on November 19, 2005, at the Ars Nova Theatre in New York City.
Julia Sweeney was a cast member on Saturday Night Live from 1989-94, and is best known for the mysteriously androgynous character, "It's Pat!". She has also served as a consulting producer on Sex and the City and Desperate Housewives. Letting Go of God is her third monologue. She performed her first, God Said, "Ha!", in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and on Broadway, as well as in a film produced by Quentin Tarantino. The CD version was nominated for a Grammy.
Critic reviews
"Searing and bracingly funny....Letting Go of God is refreshingly unrancorous, lucid and, yes, inspirational." (The New York Times)
"Letting Go of God is a gale-force breath of fresh air into the mostly political dialogue about religion in our time." (Los Angeles Times)

In a gay nightclub in Orlando on June 12, 2016, the shooter, Omar Mateen, murdered 49 people and wounded 53 others. The attack was the deadliest act of violence against the LGBTQ+ community in US history and the deadliest terrorist attack in the United States since 9/11. But there’s a story you haven’t heard. The FBI had a secret history with the shooter and his father. To obscure that history, the FBI pushed a false story that the media dutifully carried—that the attacker was a secretly gay Islamist extremist who had chosen to target Pulse and planned the attack for weeks.

Story
Best-selling author Bryan Burrough recently made a shocking discovery: The small town of Temple, Texas, where he had grown up, had harbored a dark secret. One of his high school classmates, Danny Corwin, was a vicious serial killer. In this chilling tale, Burrough raises important questions of whether serial killers can be recognized before they kill or rehabilitated after they do. It is also a story of Texas politics and power that led the good citizens of the town of Temple to enable a demon who was their worst nightmare.

Story
Monster stories aren’t just meant to entertain. They’re meant to inform, even educate. Above all, they ask us to question our own humanity. Nowhere is this truer than in stories of serial killers. What are the origins of this monstrous archetype? Why are we so fascinated with such gruesome terror? What do they reveal about our fears and anxieties? Explore these and other questions in Serial Killers: Real and Imagined, where public scholar Emily Zarka looks at the serial-killer trope across history, from murky 17th-century legends to 21st-century true-crime obsessions.

Story
At the height of World War II, Oak Ridge, Tennessee, was home to 75,000 residents, consuming more electricity than New York City. But to most of the world, the town did not exist. Thousands of civilians - many of them young women from small towns across the South - were recruited to this secret city, enticed by solid wages and the promise of war-ending work. Kept very much in the dark, few would ever guess the true nature of the tasks they performed each day in the hulking factories in the middle of the Appalachian Mountains.

Story
For his victims, for their families and for the investigators tasked with finding him, the senselessness and brutality of the Golden State Killer's acts were matched only by the powerlessness they felt at failing to uncover his identity. Then, on April 24, 2018, authorities arrested 72-year-old Joseph James DeAngelo at his home in Citrus Heights, Calif., based on DNA evidence linked to the crimes. Amazingly, it seemed, evil finally had a name. Please note: This work contains descriptions of violent crime and sexual assault and may not be suitable for all listeners.

Brilliant
Julia Sweeney was a happy Catholic who went on a spiritual quest as an adult, and wound up a non-believer. She recounts her journey here with great insight and humor.
I've read or listened to all of the "New Atheists", (Dawkins, Hitchens, Harris), and for my money, Sweeney tops them all. They're all great, in their own way, but they are sooooo serious. Julie covers the same ground, but does it in such a humorous way that it's impossible not to love her, unless you're some sort of fundamentalist believer. In that case, the humor, brilliant as it is, is bound to fly right over your head. God does not believe in humor or tolerate questioning, at least these people's world.
For people who can listen to a person veering off of the path of belief, or making jokes about religion, while treating belief with affection, this recording is for you. I love it, and refer to it often. I've given it to many Christian friends, but only those with a sense of humor. Hard-core believers will not be amused. Modern religious or secular thinkers, on the other hand, will be delighted.

Great content, stellar narration.
Julia Sweeney tackles a deep subject without being "heavy." Enjoyed performance and content immensely. Would definitely recommend to anyone, no matter what their world view, to take a frequently hilarious yet incredibly thought provoking and straightforward look at Christian beliefs and the dark side of the Bible that is so often and necessarily glossed over by it's believers to justify their beliefs. Julia Sweeney is brilliant and takes an understanding stance regarding people that still believe, while not mincing words about the truly terrible side of the Bible and her path to reason and critical thinking.

A smart and touching performance
Any additional comments?
Letting go of God is more like a live one woman show than a traditional audio book. Julia Sweeney tells the story of giving up religion in a sad, funny and heartbreaking manner. I have listened to it twice, and will probably do it again. She is like the opposite of atheists like Richard Dawkins: She knows what it means to have faith, and to willingly give the faith up for uncertainty.

I’m not being hyperbolic: This recording changed my life
This is a brilliant piece of theatre. It’s well-researched and sincere and made me question everything. I went to see her perform this live, and I listen to it about once a year. It’s a perfect piece. And I love it.

Sweeney is a National Treasure
June 2023 re-listen:
I stated in 2016 I would listen again and I did. It was just as good the second time. Again, I could really relate to his being a former indoctrinated-since-birth Catholic and gradually losing faith over time through education such as she did. Definitely a great listen for former believers, especially former Catholics.
Original 2016 review:
I thought this was fantastic! Julia Sweeney's journey from religion to non-belief mirrored mine in many ways. She was brought up in a strict Catholic family and gradually began questioning the supernatural content of Bible and the "mysterious ways" of god as she became more educated. I could relate to everything she talked about.
I only knew her as a former SNL cast member before she showed up as the host at the Rochester, MN stop of Richard Dawkins' tour in 2015. I admit that I don't remember much what she said that night, I was there to hear Dawkins and frankly didn't want to hear from anyone else. At the time I didn't know that she was active in the secular arena and was a board member of the Secular Coalition for America.
The book is narrated by Julia in a live setting, and is full of funny anecdotes and witty comments. I found myself laughing often. She knows how to tell a story and use her voice to bring it to life. I will listen to it again.

Extremeley funny and insightful
This is a real gem. Julia Sweeney manages to be extremeley funny while talking about her own journey of spiritual and religious discovery. She conveys more insights and fundamental truths in just over two hours than most of the other "popular" atheist/agnostic tomes out there that are many times longer. Unlike many of those other books, she is able to do it without being depressing, disrespectful, or taking herself too seriously. I have listened to it twice already and will likely listen again.
If the subject matter and approach of this book looks interesting to you, then I encourage you to get it. You will not be disappointed!
