About this listen
Meet Cathy Connolly - cop, kickboxing champion and now a soon-to-be mother....
Detective Garda Cathy Connolly's life has taken an unexpected turn. Faced with an unplanned pregnancy, Cathy's trying to decide how she's going to balance motherhood with the very real dangers of life on the job, especially when her latest case isn't as straightforward as it first appears.
Called to what seems like a routine break-in, Cathy discovers the bones of a baby concealed in the hem of an old wedding dress. When the dress' original owner, Lavinia Grant, is found dead in a Dublin suburb, Cathy is drawn deep into a complex web of secrets and lies spun by three generations of women.
Meanwhile, a fugitive killer has already left two dead in execution style killings across the Atlantic - and now he's in Dublin with old scores to settle. Can the team track him down before he kills again? Struggling with her own secrets, Cathy doesn't know how dangerous - and personal - this case is about to become....

Story
Two little girls stand with their heads bowed in my living room. I’m told they’re my granddaughters. Daisy is nine, and Alice seven. Daisy is the spitting image of her mother. This is the first time I’ve met them since my daughter and I fell out after she married that waste of space, Vince. They’ve come to live with me because their mother — my daughter — was murdered. In her own home while they slept close by. I think Vince killed her. But the police can’t prove it. I’ve always known he was no good. He treated my daughter like dirt. I said he’d cheat on her — but she wouldn’t listen.

Kidnappers grabbed Jenna in broad daylight, right in front of her children and their horrified classmates. Her family was issued an insane ransom demand: $25 million in cash and jewels, payable by the end of the school day, otherwise they’ll never see her again. As Jenna’s mother scrambles to gather the money, detectives Mo Butler and George Ortega follow the trail of the kidnappers, which will lead them through a sordid landscape of jealous lovers, broken dreamers, and twisted schemers. Amazing Suspense and Character Development!
This is the first time in a long while that an author so utterly pulled the rug out from under me with a truly clever plot twist! These characters are made for TV (and I mean that as a sincere compliment)...the players have layers of depth that can be teased out for many novels to come. Thank you, Sam Blake, for a true escape into the world of the Irish Guarda (or Guardi??). And as always, Aoife McMahon was brilliant in her narration...she truly brought your characters to life!

book 1
it was good, but a little confusing, I had trouble keeping the characters straight, and then the whole pregnancy thing, through the whole book the author has Steve as the one night, to much partying, stand. but then throws in another character almost at the end? who really is the father of the unborn. I just don't care for such subterfuge. I like a little mystery sure, but introducing the father of the baby at the very end? and having you think it was someone else's through the whole thing? why? had very little to do with this story really. there was no point. plus with the it ends, I bet she loses the baby anyway!
other than that part of this story. it was enjoyable.

Couldn’t stop listening -
BUT, I was not ready for it to end. Thought Emily and Tony would adopt Cat’s baby. At least it was not predictable. Great read. Looking forward to #2.

Don't waste your time
The author has tried too hard to be clever. There are too many characters in little mini plots. All eventually tie together but it is poorly done. Does not create suspense, only confusion. I found the book pretty boring.

AWFULL!!!!
I got to chapter 24 before I finally decided that I had had enough. I should have bailed out at chapter two.
Boring story, boring characters. "You will not be able to put it down" the cover said. I should never have picked it up.
One of the very few books I will be requesting a credit for.

Clumsy and irritating
I really wanted to like this book but finished only because I am self isolating due to the coronavirus. I am a fan of other crime writers whose work is set in Ireland but this was such an unsophisticated example of the genre. Listening as I walked outside, I nearly yelled a few times about obvious questions that should have been asked, steps that of course would have been taken and other actions that seemed merely plot contrivances to make things come out the way the author wanted. The heroine, Cat Connolly, is simply not believable as a mid 20s year old champion kick boxer who also almost lost her life defending another policeman, who is already a detective and who is now pregnant from a one night stand. Way too much time spent on the pregnancy, followed by a surprise reveal at the very end as to who was the father. It is not fair for an author to strew so many red herrings!. Several plots all going at once that conveniently come together in a way that strains credulity. The narrator was good but she had little to work with. I cannot recommend this series.
