Publisher's summary

In 1997, Eve Foster’s daughter, Kelsey, runs away to New Mexico and vanishes without a trace. Eve is convinced that she’s the victim of a serial killer who’s been hunting women in the region, but Kelsey’s body is never found. Years later, Eve dies, leaving everything to her adopted twin daughters. The majority of the wealthy estate in Vermont goes to Lisa, the “good daughter,” while Connie inherits only a small stipend and a property in New Mexico.

Connie, often the target of Eve's cruelty, suspects this was another of her mother's vindictive games. Connie arrives in New Mexico to find a small dilapidated red house in the desert and the home’s mysterious caretaker, Jet Montgomery, living in a shack on the property. She learns there's been a string of women murdered in the area—murders that no one will talk about.

Before Connie can get to the truth, her mother’s sadistic mind games come creeping back from the grave, and now the danger becomes all too real. With a serial killer on the loose and a trove of deadly secrets coming to the surface, Connie is in a desperate race to save herself and what little is left of her shattered family.

What?!

And wow! Unexpected twists. The best book I’ve listened to in awhile. Worth the credit.

Great Book

This book is a great listen ! The narrator did a fantastic job! The story line is full of twists! An author I plan on following and can’t wait for her next book ! It’s been a long time since I’ve been surprised by a story line! A must get !

Hard to follow

Too many characters and skips around too much. Made it very hard to get into and difficult to follow.

Listen Carefully to the Beginning of each Chapter

This is a book that probably would be easier to read. The time shifts and relationships are important. Hang in there, all will become clear after 3 or 4 chapters. I highly recommend this book.

Far fetched but good

Sick and twisted. Did not see the ending at all. Totally far fetched but keeps you engaged.

Lacking

I couldn't connect with the characters. Empathy and warmth that usually develops didn't happen here. Even in the really scary parts I wasn't scared, like I normally would be. Something is lacking. The end was confusing and unemotional. Not satisfying.

Original Storyline

Definitely not formulaic or predictable. The big reveal was multi-layered, some of which I enjoyed, some of which were a bit underwhelming. One thing that bothers me a little is when a reveal is something you were never given enough information to have seen coming if you look back...but I can get past that. It was overall a good read. Held my interest, much more plot than character driven, but showed some character development. I will definitely look for more from this author.

That ending was f'ed up! But satisfying.

This book kept me listening until the very end. The author didn't pull any punches.
