Publisher's summary
In the wild, when a wolf knows its time is over, when it knows it is of no more use to its pack, it may sometimes choose to slip away. Dying apart from its family, it stays proud and true to its nature. Humans aren’t so lucky. Luke Warren has spent his life researching wolves. He has written about them, studied their habits intensively, and even lived with them for extended periods of time. In many ways, Luke understands wolf dynamics better than those of his own family. His wife, Georgie, has left him, finally giving up on their lonely marriage. His son, Edward, twenty-four, fled six years ago, leaving behind a shattered relationship with his father. Edward understands that some things cannot be fixed, though memories of his domineering father still inflict pain. Then comes a frantic phone call: Luke has been gravely injured in a car accident with Edward’s younger sister, Cara. Suddenly everything changes: Edward must return home to face the father he walked out on at age eighteen. He and Cara have to decide their father’s fate together. Though there’s no easy answer, questions abound: What secrets have Edward and his sister kept from each other? What hidden motives inform their need to let their father die . . . or to try to keep him alive? What would Luke himself want? How can any family member make such a decision in the face of guilt, pain, or both? And most importantly, to what extent have they all forgotten what a wolf never forgets: that each member of a pack needs the others, and that sometimes survival means sacrifice?

An exuberant, one-of-a-kind novel about love and family, war and nature, new money and old values by a brilliant New Yorker contributor. The Portable Veblen is a dazzlingly original novel that's as big-hearted as it is laugh-out-loud funny. Set in and around Palo Alto amid the culture clash of new money and old (antiestablishment) values, and with the specter of our current wars looming across its words, The Portable Veblen is an unforgettable look at the way we live now.

beautifully woven story
I am always blown away by Jodi Picoult's books, and this was no exception. The way the wolf facts are tied in to the story is gorgeous and artful, as is the way she plays with the darker sides of human nature while still grating lovable characters.
My one big complaint is that I was very disappointed with the narrator for Georgie. Much of her narration (especially dialogue, and even more specifically male dialogue) was very over done to the point of being comical while trying to express very serious things. The other narrators did excellent jobs, however, and the book was overall easy to listen to.

Loved this book so much!
Enjoyed this book even more than I thought I would. A compelling story of a family once broken then eventually healed, against the odds, against a backdrop of the nature and lives of wolves in the wild. The author beautifully blends the story with scientific information about wolves, that somehow helps us to make sense of the lives of these characters. I read this as an audiobook and found that it was very helpful to listen to the entire book a second time. I had definitely missed a few important points the first time around. I'm so disappointed that I have now finished this story, and will miss it, which is undoubtedly the sign of a great book!
Strongly recommend!

What does the wolf have to do with this?
Loved the story, but hated the concurrent wolf story. About half way through the book, I fast forwarded past the wolf parts as it gave no added meaning to the story. Or if it did, I didn't get it.
So enjoy the read, but skip the wolves.

Good but a little long to get there
I really enjoyed this book much more than I had anticipated. I felt it had a lot of places that could’ve been a little shorter. I am truly a Jodi Picoult fan & just can’t get enough of her books! So, what’s the Barney snippet in the Epilogue? That also threw me?

Great Performance, Interesting Story!
What does the narrators bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Each chapter in this book is written from the perspective of a different charecter and there is a different narrator reading for each charecter. I really liked that!
Any additional comments?
This book kept me interested all the way through and the narration was great!

Jodi Pocoult--Lone Wolf
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes. This is my first audio book so I chose my favorite author. I didn't think I could follow by just listening but it just like being at the movies. I could picture everything going on.
Who was your favorite character and why?
No one favorite character. They all play an integral part--just like all of Jodi Picoults books. Edward coming home dealing with his hatred of his father. Cara at 17 having to grow up to make choices no 17 year old should have to make. Luke the father--the lone wolf.
What about the narrators’s performance did you like?
The narration was very clear and concise. It was not monotone.
If you could rename Lone Wolf, what would you call it?
Lone Wolf is a good title. I like the comparison between the wolf pack and the family pack.
Any additional comments?
I was glad I chose this audio to book to be my first to listen to. I will be getting more.

Not as compelling as Jodi's other Novels
What made the experience of listening to Lone Wolf the most enjoyable?
Learning about wolf culture was very, very interesting - however I felt like this story has been done before. The right to die - quality of life.....
What did you like best about this story?
As always, I love the complexity of the characters Jodi writes.
What about the narrators???s performance did you like?
I love that Jodi writes in different voices - and the audio version uses different narrators to speak those parts. It makes it very enjoyable to listen to.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
No extreme reactions, I felt this story has been done many times. I didn't laugh or cry.
Any additional comments?
Jodi Piccoult remains one of my favorite authors but I felt like this book was recycled and the wolf story line just added to a right to die plot.
