Story
Her palace shimmered with onyx, garnets, and gold, but was richer still in political and sexual intrigue. Above all else, Cleopatra was a shrewd strategist and an ingenious negotiator. Though her life spanned fewer than forty years, it reshaped the contours of the ancient world. She was married twice, each time to a brother. She waged a brutal civil war against the first when both were teenagers. She poisoned the second. In a masterly return to the classical sources, Stacy Schiff here boldly separates fact from fiction to rescue the magnetic queen whose death ushered in a new world order.

Story
England's Tudor monarchs - Henry VII, Henry VIII, Edward VI, Mary I, and Elizabeth I - are perhaps the most celebrated and fascinating of all royal families in history. Their love affairs, their political triumphs, and their overturning of the religious order are the subject of countless works of popular scholarship. But for all we know about Henry's quest for male heirs or Elizabeth's purported virginity, the lives of the Tudor monarchs away from the public eye remain largely beyond our grasp, mostly not chronicled by previous historians.

Story
The New York Times bestselling author of the Six Tudor Queens series explores the private side of the legendary king Henry VIII and his dramatic and violent reign in this extraordinary historical novel. Young Henry began his rule as a magnificent and chivalrous Renaissance prince who embodied every virtue. He had all the qualities to make a triumph of his rule, yet we remember only the violence. Henry famously broke with the Pope, founding the Church of England and launching a religious revolution that divided his kingdom. He beheaded two of his wives and cast aside two others.

Publisher's summary
Critic reviews
"The portrait is drawn delicately, with pleasant touches of humor...Fraser's approach is controlled and thoughtful." (Publishers Weekly)
"Absorbing as ever. Fraser's blend of insight and research persuade us that this unfortunate queen deserves neither the vilification nor the idealization she has received." (The New Yorker)
"Donada Peters...excels at injecting subtle irony into seemingly flat narrative. She handles the snotty comments and the lewd scandal-mongering of the court with equal aplomb. Fraser is one of the most highly respected and best-selling biographers of our time, and it's easy to see why in this enlightening glimpse into the turbulent France of the 1770s." (AudioFile)

"Good people, I am come hither to die, and by a law I am condemned to the same." These were the heartbreaking words of a 17-year-old girl, Lady Jane Grey, as she stood on the scaffold awaiting death on a cold February morning in 1554. Minutes later, her head was struck from her body with a single stroke of a heavy ax. Her death for high treason sent shock waves through the Tudor world and served as a gruesome reminder to all who aspired to a crown that the ax could fall at any time.

Story
It was the most influential marriage of the 19th Century - and one of history’s most enduring love stories. Traditional biographies tell us that Queen Victoria inherited the throne as a naïve teenager, when the British Empire was at the height of its power, and seemed doomed to find failure as a monarch and misery as a woman until she married her German cousin Albert and accepted him as her lord and master. Now renowned chronicler Gillian Gill turns this familiar story on its head, revealing a strong, feisty queen, and a brilliant, fragile prince working together to build a family.

Story
Queen Victoria and Albert, the Prince Consort, had nine children, who, despite their very different characters, remained a close-knit family. Inevitably, as they married into European royal families, their loyalties were divided and their lives dominated by political controversy. This is not only the story of their lives in terms of world impact but also of personal achievements in their own right, individual contributions to public life in Britain and overseas, and as the children of Queen Victoria and the Prince Consort.

Story
The history books have cast Katherine of Aragon, the first queen of King Henry VIII of England, as the ultimate symbol of the Betrayed Woman, cruelly tossed aside in favor of her husband’s seductive mistress, Anne Boleyn. Katherine’s sister, Juana of Castile, wife of Philip of Burgundy and mother of the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, is portrayed as “Juana the Mad,” whose erratic behavior included keeping her beloved late husband’s coffin beside her for years.

A captivating exploration of the role in which Queen Victoria exerted the most international power and influence: as a matchmaking grandmother. Queen Victoria's Matchmaking travels through the glittering, decadent palaces of Europe from London to Saint Petersburg, weaving in scandals, political machinations, and family tensions. It is at once an intimate portrait of a royal family and an examination of the conflict caused by the marriages the Queen arranged. Charles Robert Darwin was an English naturalist, geologist, and biologist, best known for his contributions to the science of evolution. He established that all species of life have descended over time from common ancestors and, in a joint publication with Alfred Russel Wallace, introduced his scientific theory that this branching pattern of evolution resulted from a process that he called natural selection, in which the struggle for existence has a similar effect to the artificial selection involved in selective breeding.

Marie Antoinette was a child of 14 when she was made to leave her family and country to become the wife of another child, France's 15-year-old King Louis the XVI. Far from home and suddenly thrust not only into the role of a woman and wife, but of a queen, Marie Antoinette lived an astonishing, though short, existence.

Impeccable research
This work is fascinating, dense, and impeccably researched. It features the perspectives of numerous people in the royal household, through their writings, her personal letters, and the government minutiae. Much of Marie Antoinette's story is heartbreaking; being married off at 14 to a weak husband who refused to consummate their marriage, a cruel press, and a conniving Royal Court full of social climbers who hated Austrians. The stuff this child had to put up with! If you've seen the movie by Sofia Coppola, you're familiar with some of the content. By the way, she never said, "Let them eat cake," and Fraser shares the history of this phrase in the book. It's a long slog, but I learned a lot from it.

It goes by fast
Making my way through royalty through centuries via audio books and this was an excellent, quick(er) and - yes - emotional, read. I found my preconceived knowledge or what I thought I knew challenged and re-educated through this tome. Not only are you learning about Marie-Antoinette, but Louis XVI, their family, relations, events of the Revolution. It is easy to keep up with events and names while listening. I am sad it has ended - I am well read on many monarchs but I have not cried for any like I did for Marie Antoinette (Mary Queen of Scots would have been it emotionally). If you are thinking about it, just get it. The 2006 movie featuring Kirsten Dunst also is nearly fact for fact up until about 1787 (where the movie ends).

A touching tale
Fraser's elegant telling and touching tale of the maligned and exploited queen contains perfect proportions of intimate domestic detail, analysis and historic background. I was carried along by it's compelling momentum and even-handed description of the personal and social tragedies of the French Revolution.
Yes, the reader Donada Peters takes a little getting used to. But those completely intolerant of her British accent deprive themselves of an excellent "read".

Excellent, sympathetic biography
This is a well-written, superbly detailed and very engaging biography of Marie Antoinette. Unlike other reviewers, I thought the narrator did an excellent job, underscoring the drama adequately, provided nice characterizations of the historical figures, and pronounced the French and other foreign names on the whole rather well. It is true that her voice can be a bit harsh at times, but I didn't find it got in the way of enjoying the book.

Very informative! Best History. It's wonderful.
Very informative and very interesting at the same time. There is an overflow of interesting information about Marie Antoinette and those close who were close to her that isn't well known. Alot of scandal and juicy details. It's hard to believe that this all really happened. There is a lot of reference information dropped causually, which adds to the credability of the book. Antonia Fraser did an excellant job helping the reader/listenter comprehend the complexity of the subject without losing interest. Infact, at times it's jaw dropping. The narrator is perfect for the job. Very well spoken and uses different accents in order help imagine the people she spoke of.

Was hoping for more dialogue.
I was hoping for dialogue between characters. I had just finished a series on Louis XV's mistresses where there was more dialogue and I guess I assumed this would be written the same way. Though this book had great information and insight into Marie Antoinette's life it could be dull at times as it just read over facts of her life. If the preview option would have been in the middle of the book instead of the introduction, I probably would not have purchased the book since my expectations were different from the product. Overall though I did enjoy the book.

A groundbreaking book, but a fumnel-view of M.A.
This book is highly regarded and for the time it was published, very groundbreaking in busting the myths around Marie Antoinette. I found the first few chapters difficult for audiobook, since they mostly cover Royal family lineage and there are a bazillion names and ranks to remember. Midway, it picks up as MA becomes a Queen and ends strong with her demise. However, if you're looking for a larger view of what the Revolution was about or anything outside of palace doors, you'll be disappointed. I was as mystified as MA at deciphering the politics surrounding her. The reader is expected to have a basic knowledge of the main players of the French Revolution. Key leaders are given no backstory and even Louis XV's part in the cause of the Revolution is given short shrift. The main focus is on the daily life of MA, her relationship with her family and how she dealt with 'haters.' I feel like i know who she was as a woman now, but I'll have to read a separate book on the Revolution itself. The movie actually added more detail that wasn't in the book. Overall, I'd say read it for a foundation on MA, but go elsewhere for the bigger picture.
