About this listen

Academy Award nominee Rachel McAdams stars in Mary Jane, a poignant and intimate drama following a single mother’s journey caring for her chronically ill young son. Set in New York City, the play unfolds in two parts—Mary Jane's small Queens apartment and a pediatric hospital.

With unflinching honesty and unexpected humor, we witness Mary Jane's tireless devotion, her interactions with medical professionals, and her struggle to maintain her sense of self.

Playwright Amy Herzog's naturalistic dialogue and carefully observed details create an achingly authentic portrait of contemporary motherhood and medical care. Mary Jane offers a clear-eyed look at resilience and human connection in trying circumstances.

Available in Dolby Atmos on Audible.

this book easily draws you in and holds your attention every moment. in a short amount of time you feel like you know these characters. then the end just kind of drops you. it's perhaps meant to allow you to imagine your own ending, but there are too many choices and you are so invested in the characters that you would like to know what actually happens in the story. it's a little disappointing.

Amazing performance

This was so realistic, life with a child with severe developmental delay… I could feel all the feels

Too real

Trigger warning: NICU stay. This story is from a broadway show about a mom of a special needs child and deals with a NICU stay. My son was born 5 weeks early and we had a week-long stay at the NICU, this felt like being back there. It was nice to hear someone else’s story as it felt identical in even the short amount of time we stayed. It was hard to listen.

This book was captivating. I love Rachel Mcadams which really drew me in, she portrays to be a doting mother caring for her son who suffers from health impairments. Along the storyline, it almost feels like she may be reliving her son or having metal breakdown. It was riveting to say the least. Wish it was longer.

The story was nothing veryvspecial, but good. The performance of the actors was excellent. It was a bit hard to grasp the scene a couple of times. But in general, the atmosphere was portrayed efficiently.

An OK story with brilliant performance

For parents or parent that has experienced a beloved child in this situation, thank you. Patricia Anne lived for 17 1/2 years. She “passed” 31 years ago. Thank you for giving words to our loving experience with our redheaded, blue eyed, nonverbal, interested in other people, little girl. We look forward to seeing them, again. Just tell me in words what happened. My blessed child, also, is “being normal” with God.

Please, tell me the ending. Don’t make me guess.
