Publisher's summary

--WALL STREET JOURNAL BESTSELLER--

The Gospel of Mary Magdalene reveals a very different love story from the one we've come to refer to as Christianity. Harvard-trained theologian Meggan Watterson leads us verse by verse through Mary's gospel to illuminate the powerful teachings it contains.

A gospel, as ancient and authentic as any of the gospels that the Christian bible contains, was buried deep in the Egyptian desert after an edict was sent out in the 4th century to have all copies of it destroyed. Fortunately, some rebel monks were wise enough to refuse—and thanks to their disobedience and spiritual bravery, we have several manuscripts of the only gospel that was written in the name of a woman: The Gospel of Mary Magdalene.

Mary's gospel reveals a radical love that sits at the heart of the Christian story. Her gospel says that we are not sinful; we are not to feel ashamed or unworthy for being human. In fact, our purpose is to be fully human, to be a "true human being"—that is, a person who has remembered that, yes, we are a messy, limited ego, and we are also a limitless soul.

And all we need to do is to turn inward (again and again); to meditate, like Mary Magdalene, in the way her gospel directs us, so that we can see past the ego of our own little lives to what's more real, and lasting, and infinite, and already here, within.

With searing clarity, Watterson explains how and why Mary Magdalene came to be portrayed as the penitent prostitute and relates a more historically and theologically accurate depiction of who Mary was within the early Christ movement. And she shares how this discovery of Mary's gospel has allowed her to practice, and to experience, a love that never ends, a love that transforms everything.

Thank you

Thank you, Meggan Watterson: for helping me to understand so many things about our incarnation, MM. Thank you for showing me strength in the uterine form which has been kept from us. Thank you for leading me toward this journey with and through the powers, with and to our soul, with and alongside such a beautiful journey as yours.
It is hard for me to finish books. Yours, I will treasure all my life.

This book explains so much for me

So much wonderfulness in this book for me. It explains the symbolism in the cross is a way that feels right. It Answers so many questions I have had since growing up in a Baptist church. I so enjoyed the audio that I had to get the book to highlight the important bits (most of the book!) because I was taking too many notes. Thank you for this!

Love!

“Our first country was a woman’s body. Our first element was water. And our first reality was darkness.”
This book was recommended to me by my best friend. She knew that this book would reach me in a way I didn’t know I needed. I have always struggled with my Christianity, but always had faith in my heart. Meggan’s journey, understanding and narrative of Mary Magdalene are truly riveting. There are so many moments throughout her reading that gave me goosebumps. I feel profoundly empowered in my own ability and faith. Thank you Ms. Watterson. Your words ignited a love of faith I frequently push aside.

Empowering and Transformative

This is a profoundly beautiful book for many reasons. I offer three here:

First, it is honest and heartfelt. Meggan is offering us an insight to her truths.

Second, it reveals the value of Mary Magdalene to a world that desperately needs to recognize the divine feminine as Jesus did.

Third, it teaches the primacy of Love. When all else is stripped away, and all we have left is Love, we find that Love is all we ever needed.

Thank you for sharing this
Blessed Be

Wow. This book was amazing. If you've read Dan Brown's The DaVinci Code and ever wanted to delve deeper into the mystery of the Holy Grail, this book may be for you. Really enjoyed it.
