Story
On the playing field, natural talent isn’t enough—there’s a mental component that determines whether athletes win the race or wipe out before the finish line. But what separates standout sports stars from the rest? In a paradigm-shifting new theory, acclaimed sportswriter Matt Fitzgerald identifies two key traits behind athletic success: strict self-regulation over thoughts and emotions and an unquenchable psychological need to pursue victory—even when it means enduring extreme mental and physical suffering.

Story
In Wildlife Wars, Terry Grosz serves up fascinating stories - alternately hair-raising, hilarious, and heart-wrenching - from his 30-year struggle to protect wildlife in America. A natural storyteller, Grosz writes about the remarkable characters he met - on both sides of the law - as he matched wits with elk poachers, salmon snaggers, commercial-market duck hunters, and a host of other law-breakers. Best of all, though, these stories are so remarkably entertaining you won't want to put them down.

Overcoming Obstacles
I chose to read this book because of the emphasis on attitude. As a mathematics teacher, I began focusing on the mindset of my students as a way to improve student outcomes. The post-pandemic instructional practice expanded the mindset to include focusing on social-emotional learning to examine the whole child. Mindset has been used in instruction, and it fits the mindset limitations of a professional athlete. Most people are not willing to make the sacrifice.
In listening, I learned you can become your worst enemy by setting unrealistic goals. The narration sounds like a rough and rugged individual. The author stresses how it is vital to start with baby steps. The key to a growth mindset is that they can change their body physically and understand that emotional intelligence is the key to accomplishing their goals. The narrator's voice reminds me of Jack Webb sticking to just the facts. The growth mindset mentality shows up throughout the book. Life presents challenges, and thoroughly reading this book and believing that the protocols work is the first challenge for preparing for the rigors of a professional mindset. The critical takeaway is learning how to use the right attitude in preparing for the challenges of becoming an elite professional athlete. I recommend this book for high school athletes.

motivational and inspiring
I thoroughly enjoyed this audio book which gave me a better understanding of the profound influence of the mind on achieving athletic excellence. The knowledge I gained from this book is invaluable, and I intend to apply it to fortify my own mental resilience. The significance of cultivating a strong and focused mindset cannot be overstated, irrespective of one's level of athletic pursuit. This book effectively provides tangible examples from real-life experiences and serves as a wellspring of motivation for athletes of all levels.

Great Listen!
This audiobook Mental Toughness for Athletes by JJ Million is an excellent resource for anyone looking to improve mental strength for a range of applications - from sports and fitness, to professional and personal development. JJ provides an inspiring narrative on how we can build our mental resilience, and how our attitude and mindset matters in our success and triumph over adversity. He talks about how self belief and confidence are key, and teaches techniques to help control anxiety, reduce insecurities and strengthen self-esteem. He also emphasises the importance of short term goals, visualising success, exploiting opponents’ weaknesses, and how to become more emotionally intelligent. From the outset the author challenges the idea of impossible and encourages us to consider it as a challenge to be conquered. This audiobook is an empowering course of instruction that successfully conveys the message that we can push the boundaries of our own potential. Highly recommended!

A Book To Prime You For Success
This is a terrific book for all athletes, particularly athletes who may feel stuck and also aspiring athletes. Yet it is even more. The book could easily have been entitled Mental Toughness for Success, as everything the author says holds for all people who seek to challenge themselves to excel in some field. The author’s thesis is that mindset is critical, and no amount of talent, intelligence, or other attributes will lead to exceptional success if the required mindset is lacking.
The author emphasizes the importance of a growth mindset, which entails perspective, optimism, goal-setting, learning from mistakes, flexibility, and more. He also explains how frequently and intensely pro athletes use visualization–a habit nonathletes could stand to adopt, by the way. Throughout, these topics and others–including emotional intelligence and dealing with anxiety and fears–the author provides specific, practical advice on how to implement the book’s themes. Its tone and narration are authoritative and supportive.

Help with my track & field
My performance in school track and field never quite matched up to my peers, and I couldn't understand why until I read the book "Mental Toughness for Athletes: How Professional Athletes Train Their Minds to Win the Game Before It Begins". I realized that my mindset was holding me back - I didn't see myself as an athlete and doubted my physical capabilities. However, this book has inspired a shift in my mindset. I'm now committed to cultivating a positive attitude and approaching my running training with renewed vigour and determination. I'm grateful for the insights this book has offered me, and I'm eager to apply them to my athletic journey. Thank you!
