Story
When Ted Kerasote was ready for a new dog after losing his beloved Merle - who died too soon, as all our dogs do - he knew that he would want to give his puppy Pukka the longest life possible. But how to do that? So much has changed in the way we feed, vaccinate, train, and live with our dogs from even a decade ago. In an adventure that echoes The Omnivore’s Dilemma with a canine spin, Kerasote tackles all those subjects, questioning our conventional wisdom and emerging with vital new information that will surprise even the most knowledgeable dog lovers.

Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Few of us meet our dogs at Day One. The dog who will eventually become an integral part of our family, our constant companion, and our best friend is born without us into a family of her own. A puppy's critical early development into the dog we come to know is usually missed entirely. Dog researcher Alexandra Horowitz aimed to change that with her family's new pup, Quiddity (Quid). In this scientific memoir she charts Quid's growth from wee grub to boisterous sprite, from her birth to her first birthday.

The BEST book I have ever read!
Would you consider the audio edition of Merle's Door to be better than the print version?
Not sure I didn't read the print version.
What did you like best about this story?
One of THE best books I have ever read! It made me run the gammet of emotion and I learned something too. The relationship the author had with his dog is one that we all strive to have. I would HIGHLY recommend that everyone who loves, has loved, wants to love a dog read this book. Thank-you Ted Kerasote for writing such an inspirational story!
What does Patrick Lawlor bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
He was an amazing judge of the characters in the book and captured them very well! I enjoyed his reading very much!
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
How we all want to love a dog!

Fantastic listen
The condensed description of this title caught my attention and the author kept it for all 18 chapters. Kerasote tells the story of his and Merle's lives, how they met, lived, loved and how Merle left an indelible mark on an entire community. A truly free dog who chose the perfect human companion in Kerasote, was allowed to be who he was. The interjection of relevant canine behavioral research was incredibly refreshing. I laughed, learned and cried - highly recommend this title!

This is a wonderful book. I just finished the last 30 minutes of the book while viewing the "Merle Slideshow" on the author's website (www.kerasote.com). I wouldn't recommend doing this unless you have a box of tissues close at hand.

A great book for dog lovers
Let me first state that I love my dogs - I view them as members of my family. I believe that dogs have very distinct personalities and can communicate with humans and other animals.. If you feel that way about your dog - then you will love this book - you will laugh and cry - and wish that you too had met Merle. If you view a dog as a pet and not part of the family - then skip this book. This is a very personal insight into Ted and Merle's relationship.

Best dog story ever
I've heard or read most of the dog stories available and this is the best! The author understands the non-human communications (panting, barking, circling) of Merle plus he respects Merle's dog-world-view that I've often seen and admired. What if our eyes were noses (primary scent-organs) - a 3-dimensional (add time) view of the world. Anyone who has shared their life with a dog should hear/read Merle's Door!
