Publisher's summary

Stolen magic. Rising truths. Old demons. Welcome to Copperwood Falls.

The dust had barely settled after my skirmish at Galloway Asylum, and there I was looking forward to some downtime, maybe even a promotion. What I got instead was a covert assignment and an urgent warning from on high: Get out of the city. Vanish. Go underground. So I did.

And after a quick, or should I say bad, trip down the wrong side of memory lane, I found myself holing up in a sleepy rural town on a strictly cloak and dagger mission. Copperwood Falls. Think rolling forested hills, white picket fences, and lush apple pie - with a maggot wriggling under the crust. A haunted town where the woods whisper at night, and demons come calling. A place where the shadows are restless, and almost nothing is as it seems. Catching on to the town's dirty little secrets didn't take long, but I never imagined, not for one minute, exactly what opening the lid on that particular Pandora's Box was going to bring...

ENTERTAINING, WELL WRITTEN, ACTION/ADVENTURE!

I really liked this book, great stuff! This is the first in the series that I've listened to, so I probably won't have as much insight as those who've read the others, but all in all I really enjoyed this!! Great story, great writing, and loved the narration! Morgan is awesome! I'd definitely recommend listening and going on this ride, well worth it!! :)

Listener received this title free

good second instalment

Would I listen to it again: yes
Did the story keep me engaged: yes
Was I invested in the characters: yes
What did I like about the story? • good pace and in interesting story • darker than the first • continues on with the world-building • I'm loving the complexities of Morgan's character as we get to know him better.
• the underlying arc of the series only makes an minor appearance, this is a fairly standalone story so can be listened to without having done book 1 first.

Shawn Compton does a great job bringing this world to life, each characters personality shines through, he has good rhythm and believable inflections and it all works to make for an immersive audio experience.

Rook goes undercover...

The second adventure of Morgan Rook is intriguing, dark and unputdownable...:) I liked the first book in the series, though I thought the pace of the story was a bit uneven. This installment, however, takes you on a fast ride and never slows down.

This time Morgan has to find out why there are people going missing around a small town of Copperwood Falls. It's a good thing he has a task to do as the Organization seems to have a problem with his latest job at the Asylum - it's probably better for him to get away from their radar for a while. And so Morgan goes undercover - and as ususal he gets himself into much more than he expected...

Morgan Rook is one of those characters readers love - complex, sometimes confusing, with a lot of secrets in his past that he himself is unaware of. There is a lot of grey to him, but there is also moral strength that has kept him on the good side - so far... And though we may have thought we knew all there was to know about him in the first book, we realize as we follow him in this case that there is definitely much more in store for us to discover about him...

The imagery and the storytelling by Kit Hallows is very cinematic, and the first person narration makes the story even more engaging. Shawn Compton's interpretation adds another layer to the experience - he doesn't read Morgan's story, he IS Morgan Rook telling you about his adventures:) It's a perfect interpretation of the book.

Rook hits those dark, creepy streets again.

Morgan Rook continues fighting the good fight against all creatures dark and creepy. Steering clear of The Organization since the asylum debacle, he packs an arsenal of magical potions and embued weapons, and goes undercover to investigate the disappearance of several Copperwood Falls residents. He discovers the dark secrets of a backwoods town that will test his abilities and his sanity.

Author, Kit Hallows, has served up another exciting installment in the Order of Shadows series. Evil motives and magical weaponry abound wherever our paranormal P.I. turns up, but the thrill keeps me coming back. Shawn Compton gives another great performance full of energy and emotion. Looking forward to book three!

Rook returns with cinematic clout!

When I read the first book I thought, "This cat is giving Jim Butcher something to sweat over." After all, when was the last time you saw a new Dresden book? It has been ages, and people like me, people who have an Urban Fantasy niche to fill have started looking elsewhere for our needs. Thankfully, Kit Hallows has stepped up and created a great new character and setting that complete nourishes the Urban Fantasy itch. Talk about fun. The writing is utterly and completely cinematic. It is visual and sweeping, the action makes Michael Bay look like a kid flipping over a couple of hot wheels and matchbox cars, and the story feels like Kubrick sat up for a week smoking crack (in a good way).

Here, Morgan gets to go to a place that is like Mayberry mixed with Innsmouth, and his dark passenger is stressing the hell out. Kinda hard to blend in when everyone sees outsiders as . . . outsiders. As a bonus, we kinda get to see where Morgan came from, what molded him into the man he is today. There is also a neat little dark magic drug ring, and let us not forget that Morgan is looking for some revenge. The story is outstanding, and it is nice to see a non-Dresden character in Urban Fantasy today.

Straight out of Compton's mouth comes an amazing bit of narration (see what I did there?). He really embodies Rook and plays the man like he was living the adventure rather than reading it. I enjoy his technique, his pacing, and his voice. He is well rounded and knows how to fill your ears with exceptional story telling.

Don't miss out on an incredible series. I know, only two of these are on audible, but this is shaping up to be a series worthy of admiration and Rook a character worthy of respect. If you haven't read or listened to the first book go back and take some series ME time to enjoy this from the beginning. Even though I did receive a promo code for this review it in no way influenced my considerations of the material, and in fact, inspired me to be more honest. In fact, getting a code generally makes me harsher as a reviewer as I am more often concerned what someone like Me will decide based on my review.

Magically Wonderful

Rook's story continues in this fast paced action packed second book. Filled with twists, turns and tons of magic this story had me captivated from start to finish. The narrator was on point bringing the story and characters to life. I look forward to more from this author and narrator.

Great second book in the series.

Installment #2 was better than the first! Looking forward to following this series and see how it develops. Great characters and the narration was again on point. A series worth listening to if you are into dark forces and magic.

Intriguing

Morgan Rook is a very interesting character. Well developed. He's now investigating a creepy town were black crystals might be used for evil. There's witches, demons, vampires and were, it has it all. I will be looking for the next release.
