Publisher's summary
2015 Audie Award Finalist for Fiction and Solo Narration—Male
In a mega-stakes, high-suspense race against time, three of the most unlikely and winning heroes Stephen King has ever created try to stop a lone killer from blowing up thousands.
In the frigid pre-dawn hours, in a distressed Midwestern city, hundreds of desperate unemployed folks are lined up for a spot at a job fair. Without warning, a lone driver plows through the crowd in a stolen Mercedes, running over the innocent, backing up, and charging again. Eight people are killed; fifteen are wounded. The killer escapes.
In another part of town, months later, a retired cop named Bill Hodges is still haunted by the unsolved crime. When he gets a crazed letter from someone who self-identifies as the "perk" and threatens an even more diabolical attack, Hodges wakes up from his depressed and vacant retirement, hell-bent on preventing another tragedy.
Brady Hartfield lives with his alcoholic mother in the house where he was born. He loved the feel of death under the wheels of the Mercedes, and he wants that rush again. Only Bill Hodges, with a couple of highly unlikely allies, can apprehend the killer before he strikes again. And they have no time to lose, because Brady's next mission, if it succeeds, will kill or maim thousands.
Mr. Mercedes is a war between good and evil, from the master of suspense whose insight into the mind of this obsessed, insane killer is chilling and unforgettable.

In a future so real and near it might be now, something happens when women go to sleep: They become shrouded in a cocoon-like gauze. If they are awakened, if the gauze wrapping their bodies is disturbed or violated, the women become feral and spectacularly violent; and while they sleep they go to another place.... The men of our world are abandoned, left to their increasingly primal devices. One woman, however, the mysterious Evie, is immune to the blessing or curse of the sleeping disease.

In the middle of the night, in a house on a quiet street in suburban Minneapolis, intruders silently murder Luke Ellis' parents and load him into a black SUV. The operation takes less than two minutes. Luke will wake up at The Institute, in a room that looks just like his own, except there's no window. And outside his door are other doors, behind which are other kids with special talents - telekinesis and telepathy - who got to this place the same way Luke did: Kalisha, Nick, George, Iris, and 10-year-old Avery Dixon.

A master storyteller at his best - the O. Henry Prize winner Stephen King delivers a generous collection of stories, several of them brand-new, featuring revelatory autobiographical comments on when, why, and how he came to write (or rewrite) each story. Magnificent, eerie, utterly compelling, these stories comprise one of King's finest gifts to his constant fan. "I made them especially for you," says King. "Feel free to examine them, but please be careful. The best of them have teeth."

But with a computer program called Whirl360.com, he travels the world while never so much as stepping out the door. He pores over and memorizes the streets of the world. He examines every address, as well as the people who are frozen in time on his computer screen. Unemployed at 29, Tess Monaghan is willing to take any freelance job to pay the rent—including a bit of unorthodox snooping for her rowing buddy, Darryl "Rock" Paxton. In a city where someone is murdered almost every day, attorney Michael Abramowitz's death should be just another statistic. But the slain lawyer's notoriety—and his noontime trysts with Rock's fiancée—make the case front page news...and point to Rock as the likely murderer. But trying to prove her friend's innocence could prove costly to Tess.

Although Scott Carey doesn’t look any different, he’s been steadily losing weight. There are a couple of other odd things, too. He weighs the same in his clothes and out of them, no matter how heavy they are. Scott doesn’t want to be poked and prodded. He mostly just wants someone else to know, and he trusts Doctor Bob Ellis. In the small town of Castle Rock, the setting of many of King’s most iconic stories, Scott is engaged in a low-grade - but escalating - battle with the lesbians next door whose dog regularly drops his business on Scott’s lawn. One of the women is friendly; the other, cold as ice.

Excellent!
I am a constant reader of King. I've read his great stuff, good stuff and stayed with him during the bad weird stuff. Although there is no paranormal actvity, this book doesn't lack a boogy man. The book is narrated from the point of view of a retired detective who is going down hill in his retirement and a cold blooded killer who wants to drive said retired detective to suicide for his amusement. Mr. Mercedes is a very, very bad man- a sick twisted individual. Patton's narration is excellent, he does an excellent job of giving the characters life in his voice. It is easy to tell characters apart with Patton's narration. I found Mr. Mercedes to be a "page turner", a I need to know what happens next type of book that always has something coming next. Well done King and Patton, well done.

Another Stephen King Favorite
What made the experience of listening to Mr. Mercedes the most enjoyable?
The story line was great.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Mr. Mercedes?
Honeyboy finding his mom after she dined on the hamburger.
What about Will Patton’s performance did you like?
He was amazing. There were times I wanted to double check to make sure he was the only narrator. He did a great job with the voices.
If you could take any character from Mr. Mercedes out to dinner, who would it be and why?
Hodges of course, he would have interesting stories.

A good listen. A little too predictable.
If you could sum up Mr. Mercedes in three words, what would they be?
Suspenseful. Interesting. Predictable.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Mr. Mercedes?
Near the end when the bad guy was overtaken. It almost made me want to cheer for the person who overcame him and the manner used.
Which scene was your favorite?
When the tragic heroine told her mother off.
Who was the most memorable character of Mr. Mercedes and why?
The tragic heroine in the fact she overcame her many obstacles after to many years.
Any additional comments?
The general flow of the book was a little to familiar. Perhaps after reading so many of Mr. Kings work through the years. It was great to not be faced with a lot of blood and gore described in great detail. This gets tedious after a while. I highly recommend this effort in spite of the one shortcoming.

This book ranks among the best.
Any additional comments?
This is perhaps Stephen King's best book yet! I loved Will Patten narrating. Rich developed characters and very believable storyline.

Great Thriller
This story starts out with a bang, and never slows down until the very end. It isn't one of Stephen Kings scary creepy novels. I liked it because it is about good and evil.
