2015 Audie Award Finalist for Fiction and Solo Narration—Male

In a mega-stakes, high-suspense race against time, three of the most unlikely and winning heroes Stephen King has ever created try to stop a lone killer from blowing up thousands.

In the frigid pre-dawn hours, in a distressed Midwestern city, hundreds of desperate unemployed folks are lined up for a spot at a job fair. Without warning, a lone driver plows through the crowd in a stolen Mercedes, running over the innocent, backing up, and charging again. Eight people are killed; fifteen are wounded. The killer escapes.

In another part of town, months later, a retired cop named Bill Hodges is still haunted by the unsolved crime. When he gets a crazed letter from someone who self-identifies as the "perk" and threatens an even more diabolical attack, Hodges wakes up from his depressed and vacant retirement, hell-bent on preventing another tragedy.

Brady Hartfield lives with his alcoholic mother in the house where he was born. He loved the feel of death under the wheels of the Mercedes, and he wants that rush again. Only Bill Hodges, with a couple of highly unlikely allies, can apprehend the killer before he strikes again. And they have no time to lose, because Brady's next mission, if it succeeds, will kill or maim thousands.

Mr. Mercedes is a war between good and evil, from the master of suspense whose insight into the mind of this obsessed, insane killer is chilling and unforgettable.

Featured Article: The Shining—Book vs. Movie

Set in the claustrophobia-inducing snow-covered peaks of an isolated hotel in the middle of the Rockies, The Shining is a classic work of psychological horror that’s just about as chilling as it gets. But it’s so, so much more than your classic story of spirits and a man’s descent into madness—it’s also a tender yet deeply painful meditation on addiction, family, abuse, and redemption. Stanley Kubrick rejected Stephen King's initial treatment of the screenplay, and the author was largely dissatisfied with his novel’s jump to the big screen. So what exactly are the differences between The Shining movie and the novel?

Good story but performance up and down

Everything was good, but the narrator's voice volume range went from loud to very quiet. Often sentences started off very loudly only to drop near the end. Sentences where the characters were thinking were much too quiet causing me to have to switch volume levels. l ended up listening to the book in my study with the door closed.

A non-Stephen King reader likes this book

Except for select books I rarely read Stephen King. This book change my mind. I am going to buy the next two books, and if they are anything like the first one I will enjoy them also.

Not King's best work, but enjoyable all the same.

Keeps you engaged with something around the corner, though a little predictable at too many moments.

Wonderful! Thrilling! Intriguing!

What made the experience of listening to Mr. Mercedes the most enjoyable?

This audiobook is fantastic. Not only because of the great writing, but because Will Patton is one of my favorite narrators. Wonderful and enjoyable experience.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Definitely. Will Patton knows how to narrate so well that he has you hanging on the edge of your seat during tense parts. Very suspensful.

Which scene was your favorite?

My favorite (and the scariest part) was when they were trying to stop Brady from blowing up the concert.

If you could take any character from Mr. Mercedes out to dinner, who would it be and why?

I would take Holly out to dinner. I think she would be fun to talk to.
