Publisher's summary

In a modern and twisty retelling of Jane Eyre, a young woman must question everything she thinks she knows about love, loyalty, and murder.

Jane has lost everything: job, mother, relationship, even her home. A friend calls to offer an unusual deal—a cottage above the crashing surf of Big Sur on the estate of his employer, Evan Rochester. In return, Jane will tutor his teenage daughter. She accepts.

But nothing is quite as it seems at the Rochester estate. Though he’s been accused of murdering his glamorous and troubled wife, Evan Rochester insists she drowned herself. Jane is skeptical, but she still finds herself falling for the brilliant and secretive entrepreneur and growing close to his daughter.

And yet her deepening feelings for Evan can’t disguise dark suspicions aroused when a ghostly presence repeatedly appears in the night’s mist and fog. Jane embarks on an intense search for answers and uncovers evidence that soon puts Evan’s innocence into question. She’s determined to discover what really happened that fateful night, but what will the truth cost her?

Critic reviews

“[Eva] Kaminsky, as Jane, sounds young, savvy, and appropriately consumed by the mystery surrounding Beatrice's disappearance.… As Beatrice, [Carly] Robins sounds truly deranged, especially during her psychotic episodes and horrific self-mutilations. Despite cell phones, motorcycles, and computers, this contemporary Gothic works, thanks to clever writing and two exceptionally talented narrators.”AudioFile Magazine

“A modern American Jane Eyre…Marcott’s reworking of this Gothic classic holds its own.”Kirkus Reviews

“This imaginative take on Charlotte Bronte’s Gothic novel has several satisfying nods to the source material, but veers away just enough to create a refreshing new experience. Marcott’s Jane is a formidable protagonist…Fans of Jane Eyre who enjoyed Rachel Hawkins’s The Wife Upstairs will appreciate this equally enjoyable retelling from Marcott.”Library Journal (starred review)

If you like gothic novels…

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. I was expecting a weak, watered down version of Jane Eyre, but instead got a fresh, reimagined take that was not a lame remake. Kudos to the author for not falling into the typical pitfalls of basing a novel on a classic!

Great story*

I wasn't to sure in the beginning. The narration was so cynical at first. I stuck with it and it seemed to get better. The story is so good that I'm sure glad I did! Great romantic mystery. Fabulous way the whole thing wraps up in the end!

The narrator had a great style and pace.

The story somehow dragged a bit. I kept thinking about how creepy it could get….but stopped short of. Kind of lacked the suspense or creepiness a thriller implies. I often got sleepy listening. Also, the ending was just “meh” for me personally.

Dark, Broody, and Gratifying

Should I admit that I missed the portion of the blurb that indicated this was a twisty retelling of "Jane Eyre?" It wouldn't have mattered, except I (embarrassingly) judged this book by its cover and expected a bit of a light-hearted read for some silly reason. Maybe it's time to adjust my meds...

This isn't light-hearted amusement, but a bleak, saturnine view into the life of Jane, a woman who has fought beyond her ugly past and seeks to make her way in the world. While the story itself is full of a nervous apprehension caused by secrets, gossip, and glimpses of the inexplicable, Jane is a formidable young woman with an unseen strength. She brings fresh hope into an otherwise dreary tale, being a person of incredible inner beauty and love. She naturally sees the good in others, even though life has shown her very little reason to be hopeful.

I loved the stark honesty Jane possesses and her strong spine as she confronts the dark and reticent Evan as well as the lying Otis. She only seems meek because she thinks she is. She is, in fact, anything but, and proves that as she loses her heart but not her head. What a rarity to have a character fall madly in love yet have the resilience to walk away when things don't seem right. The author gets deep praise for maintaining the spirit and fortitude of Jane Eyre.

I also loved the brutal episodes into the mind of the unhinged former model Beatrice. The writing was superb, with chilling glimpses into her madness. So while this novel was not at all what I thought I had chosen, it was much better: exceedingly well done with a pace and tone that kept me fascinated to the very end.

Different!

Unusual story, well written. A little slow moving at times for me, but very original.

The 5 stars for narration are specifically for the second narrator (Eva Kaminsky?) who was indeed quite good. The first narrator was okay. The character she portrayed (the main character) was pretty annoying and difficult for me to like.

Overall, however, this is a pretty good story and worth listening to.

Meh

I took a chance because the summary intrigued me. However I just didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would. This one just wasn't for me. It happens sometimes

Narrator Needs Guidance/Coaching

Loved the book but the cadence of the narrator’s voice was difficult to listen to. It had this sing sing up down qual to it.
