When Vivien Walker left her home in the Mississippi Delta, she swore never to go back, as generations of the women in her family had. But in the spring, nine years to the day since she'd left, that's exactly what happens - Vivien returns, fleeing from a broken marriage and her lost dreams for children. What she hopes to find is solace with "Bootsie", her dear grandmother who raised her, a Walker woman with a knack for making everything all right. But instead she finds that her grandmother has died and that her estranged mother is drifting further away from her memories.

Kentucky, 1850. An enslaved groom named Jarret and a bay foal forge a bond of understanding that will carry the horse to record-setting victories across the South. Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

The Stantons and the Nortons were families in the truest, oldest sense: extended networks of kin stretching across the mountains, everyone within hiking distance. They’d come from the British Isles and settled in the Appalachians of North Carolina during the 1700s, bringing with them their dearly loved songs and their clannish ways, their ties to the land ultimately becoming as strong as their ties to one another.

Allan Gurganus's Oldest Living Confederate Widow Tells All became an instant classic upon its publication. Critics and fans alike fell in love with the voice of 99-year-old Confederate widow Lucy Marsden, one of the most entertaining and loquacious heroines in American literature. Lucy married at the turn of the 20th century, when she was 15 and her husband was 50. If Colonel William Marsden was a veteran of the "War for Southern Independence", Lucy became a "veteran of the veteran" with a unique perspective on Southern history and Southern manhood.

During the Great Depression, Jeb Nubey is running from the law when he meets three abandoned children. With nowhere else to go the group passes a stormy night in a comforting church. When they are discovered, a case of mistaken identity ensues. It seems the congregation has been waiting for their new pastor, a widower with three kids. Looks like more trouble for Jeb. Yet the chance for a steady job and three squares a day is too good to turn down.

Ten-year-old Pearl Spence is a daydreamer, playing make-believe to escape life in Oklahoma's Dust Bowl in 1935. The Spences have their share of misfortune, but as the sheriff's family, they've got more than most in this dry, desolate place. They're who the town turns to when there's a crisis or a need. Pearl is proud of her loving, strong family, though she often wearies of tracking down her mentally impaired older sister or wrestling with her grandmother's unshakable belief in a God. Then a mysterious man bent on revenge tramps into her town of Red River.

Annie Bell can't escape the dust. It's in her hair, covering the windowsills, coating the animals in the barn, and in the corners of her children's dry, cracked lips. It's 1934, and the Bell farm in Mulehead, Oklahoma, is struggling as the earliest storms of the Dust Bowl descend. The wheat harvests are drying out, and people are packing up their belongings as storms lay waste to the Great Plains.

Sitting in a jail cell on the eve of his hanging, April 1, 1875, freedman Persimmon "Persy" Wilson wants nothing more than to leave some record of the truth - his truth. He may be guilty but not of what he stands accused: the kidnapping and rape of his former master's wife. In 1860 Persy had been sold to Sweetmore, a Louisiana sugar plantation, alongside a striking light-skinned house slave named Chloe. Their deep and instant connection fueled a love affair and inspired plans to escape their owner, Master Wilson, who claimed Chloe as his concubine.

Excellent read
This was so much better than I thought it would be.
The characters were very well developed without over doing it. I really liked the perspective from different players on the same issue. I did not expect several twists at the end (which were all great)

Compelling story with great performances
This is a difficult story in so many ways. Several layers of heartbreak as well as painful aspects of our world like death, war, Nazi Germany, hatred, bigotry, racial discrimination and segregation. All of that is conveyed in the stories of a few families and the community around them. I didn’t feel like I was being taught anything yet I learned so much. I also felt a full range of emotions that I don’t experience every day. Mudbound is an incredible story and absolutely worth reading.

What a Gem!
What a gem! Great scenes, wonderful dialogue, well developed characters and a plot that moves quickly. I couldn???t stop listening. Even when I thought I knew where the story was leading, I didn???t!
This story is in the same league as The Help, the Kitchen House and Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter . The author does an excellent job of showing us a view of 1950???s rural Mississippi and the narrators are almost perfect. The only thing I would change (and only a little) is the narration for Jamie,,, the voice is good but the reading is just that,,, reading and not performance

I can't believe that when I started this book, I was unsure about it. Even when it ended, I wasn't sure! But there is something about it, and pay attention, because it's the wrap up that brings it all together. I was fooled by the characters, for sure. In a great way!

Good story, multiple narrators works really well
In general I’m not a huge fan of the multiple narrator style of audiobook. I find they can distract from the story, especially if multiple narrators end up performing things like dialog. However, this was a pleasant exception. Each narrator was excellent and totally inhabited their character. The narrative structure also helped by alternating viewpoints between chapters. By the time I was done listening I couldn’t imagine anyone else doing justice to each voice.
The story itself was also quite good. Though I thought it bogged down a bit in places, it was an eye-opening account of what life might have been like not that long ago in a place not that far away.

After the War
Where does Mudbound rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
It certainly was engrossing to listen to. I looked forward to having time to listen to it.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Mudbound?
The barn scene was exciting tense, and heartbreaking all at the same time. One of those I don't want to hear what happens, but can't stop listening.
Have you listened to any of the narrator’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
There were many voices in Mudbound, which added to the richness of the story
If you could take any character from Mudbound out to dinner, who would it be and why?
Do I have to pick just one? (I'd leave Pappy home.)
Any additional comments?
Great story, excellant performances.

Mudbound Is Spellbinding
We know where it's going, but we can't look away. It's like not wanting to watch a car wreck that's about to happen, but not being able to turn away. It is a character-driven story. And the characters are so well drawn with human flaws. And as they must, they pay for their sins.
Excellent portrayal of conditions between blacks and whites in the South during that time period. Jordan's whites are all (except for the Jewish doctor) guilty of racism either through their direct actions or as acquiescent accomplices.
I plan to read this book again.

Powerful book
This was a very good book with excellent narration by a cast of performers. At times, very difficult to listen to the level of racism present in post WWII Mississippi. A black decorated hero returning from war, treated like an animal at home. The whites that felt the unfairness of the situation, were racist as well... much like what we see going on today in 2019. Makes you reflect, wondering why we
haven’t come as far as we would have liked to come, knowing that we sadly have not. A heart wrenching story at times. Definitely worth s credit.
