Publisher's summary

Lord Arkus of Blackriver Castle readily admits that he is a villain and sees no reason why it should stop him from being the protagonist of this book. After all, Prince Kellemar, an aspiring hero, has defeated him in a rather questionable way. Bent on revenge, Arkus attempts to capture a powerful evil spirit who would make him nearly invincible, but a last-minute mistake leaves him with a Sparkling instead - "a goody-goody spirit that helps heroes, watches over little children, and messes up villains' plans."

Bound to Lord Arkus for five years of service and sworn to act in his best interests, the Sparkling is not easy to get rid of, and of course his understanding of "best interests" is quite different from what Lord Arkus has in mind.

Fun Little Book

What a fun little book! It was filled with everything you want an adventure to have. I'm going to recommend this to my 5th grade students. I think they will enjoy reading about the reluctant hero.

My Sparkling Misfortune

My then 10 year old daughter & I read this together about 5 years ago. We loved it and laughed like crazy. We rushed on to read My Royal Pian Quest which was a little darker in spots but still a fabulous read. We e-mailed the author together to tell her how much we loved it and to BEG for another story from Lord Arcus. She e-mailed us back. We've read both several times since then & still love them. Hearing the book makes it even better!!!

Narration is perfect, once you get used to it

Very funny. Quite creative. There's a second book if you like the first one. I thought the narrator was awful at first, but persisted, and realized that it was great for the content.

most unique and clever middle grade fantasy

AudioBook Review:
Stars: Overall 4 Narration 4 Story 4

In what has to be the most unique and clever middle grade fantasy that I have encountered in a long while, Lond’s first installment in her Lakeland Knights series is told from the villain’s perspective. Arkus is the villain, and he’s actually a pretty bad one: his attempts to gain the upper hand by capturing an evil spirit to do his bidding is foiled when he gets an overly optimistic, cheerful and good natured ‘sparkling’ who is now bound to him for five years. Arkus is wholly enamored of the ‘bad boy image’ he is struggling to put forward, yet his every slip into less than villainous behavior results in fulsome praise by his indentured sparkling. A quest to end all, with his own nefarious turn on events to give him the upper hand, there is action and fantasy aplenty to keep readers and listeners interested and wanting to know what comes next.

Narration for this story is presented by A. T. Chandler, who manages to imbue Arkus with a touch of the over-blown cartoon villain, the sparkling with a lilting irish brogue, and the other voices with qualities that suit both their position and age, and never seems to miss a trick. I wasn’t sure at first if I would like the voices, but there is, as the story proceeds, a feeling that Arkus is struggling to keep the mask of the villain voice even as he is sensing (to his distress) tat he is changing for the good. Clever insets as he tells us he is using sarcasm or scorn that doesn’t quite reach the voice, it is clear that Arkus is very invested in his image, and will have difficulty releasing his stranglehold.

I received an AudioBook copy of the title for purpose of honest review via AudioBook Jukebox. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.
