Publisher's summary

A dazzling new series debuts with a remarkable heroine certain to become a new icon of suspense, propelled by the singular narrative genius of New York Times best-selling author Dean Koontz.

"I very much need to be dead."

These are the chilling words left behind by a man who had everything to live for - but took his own life. In the void that remains stands his widow, Jane, surrounded by questions destined to go unanswered...unless she does what all the grief, fear, confusion, and fury inside of her demand: find the truth, no matter what.

There is no one else to speak for Jane's husband - or the others who have followed him into death at their own hands. Although people of talent and accomplishment, people admired and happy and sound of mind, have recently been committing suicide in surprising numbers, no one else is willing to give up everything just to seek, to find, to know. No one except Jane. But ahead lies only risk. Because those arrayed against her are legion...and dangerously devoted to protecting something profoundly important - or terrifying - enough to exterminate any and all in their way.

Too many have already died, and those responsible will learn that all their malevolent power may not be enough to stop a woman as clever as they are cold-blooded, as relentless as they are ruthless - and who is driven by a righteous rage they can never comprehend. Because it is born of love.

MEH

I expected more after the hype I'd read... To start the narration is extremely poor, being both slow and bland... The lack of affect probably colored most of any enjoyment... Along w/ that the story started ponderously, and failed to really grab my attention until around halfway through... After that the flow/pace is good, and the story and plot points come together... Nice commingling of eugenics and human slavery to bring about something utterly terrifying... None of the characters really jump off the page, excepting Jane, and in that case the depth seems a bit forced... I've noticed the same of Koontz's past few novels and wonder if he's lost something off his fastball... That being said, the ending does set up a nice followup, and maybe this lacked so much as a result of being largely a setup novel for the series? Dunno, but this one's average, and poor performance brings it down more than that...

Koontz is back

I'm a Dean Koontz fan. I've read almost everything he's written . I've been disappointed in his last couple of books. This is a great thriller. I can't wait for the sequel.

A very good listen

It's a riveting story that kept me hooked and asking questions the entire time. Rodgers' character range is a little narrow, especially when it comes to male characters, but overall she was well-suited and a good voice for the book.

Just okay

I did not enjoy the narrator especially during the first half of the book. She grew on me somewhat towards the end. There were exceedingly long lags between chapters which at first made me think something was wrong with my audio. I was disappointed with the character I never felt like I liked her that much. I loved the Odd Thomas series and maybe I shouldn't have expected that same likability with this character. Overall meh.......

Timely

There is something about the way Koontz allows his words to flow that transport us into the places in his imagination. Well versed tempo that captures our minds and reminds us that we shouldn't ignore or accept the evils in the world through inaction. His heroine, once again has an innate goodness that leaves you feeling hopeful that there are those like her in our real world.

The Silent Corner

I found this book to be captivating. Jane Hawk is a strong, interesting, and likeable character. I enjoyed this book and was pleased that it was consistent and did not fade out at the end as many books do.

Good...kind of predictable

Thrilling drama. Wanted to start back with the first book in series so familiar with this kind of story from other authors.

Koontz does it again!!

Tense, touching and thrilling DK proves again that he is a master Storyteller, but is also not afraid to question and pose the ethics of dangers that may soon make the jump from fiction to reality. Questions that must be asked before it's too late.
The last couple sentences are particularly chilling. A must read for any DK fan.
