Publisher's summary

The spine-tingling, bone-chilling novel of supernatural suspense from the number one New York Times best-selling author of The Fireman and Horns - now an AMC original series starring Zachary Quinto, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Ashleigh Cummings.

"A masterwork of horror." (Time)

Victoria McQueen has an uncanny knack for finding things: a misplaced bracelet, a missing photograph, answers to unanswerable questions. When she rides her bicycle over the rickety old covered bridge in the woods near her house, she always emerges in the places she needs to be.

Charles Talent Manx has a gift of his own. He likes to take children for rides in his 1938 Rolls-Royce Wraith with the vanity plate NOS4A2. In the Wraith, he and his innocent guests can slip out of the everyday world and onto hidden roads that lead to an astonishing playground of amusements he calls Christmasland.

The journey across the highway of Charlie's twisted imagination transforms his precious passengers, leaving them as terrifying and unstoppable as their benefactor.

Then comes the day when Vic goes looking for trouble...and finds her way to Charlie. That was a lifetime ago. Now, the only kid ever to escape Charlie's evil is all grown up and desperate to forget. But Charlie Manx hasn't stopped thinking about Victoria McQueen. On the road again, he won't slow down until he's taken his revenge. He's after something very special - something Vic can never replace.

As a life-and-death battle of wills builds, Vic McQueen prepares to destroy Charlie once and for all - or die trying.

Editorial reviews

Editors Select, May 2013 - Christmasland is a place where every day is Christmas morning and every night is Christmas Eve. This might not sound like fertile ground for a horror novel, but rest assured; just as there's nothing funny about Pennywise the Dancing Clown in Stephen King's It, there's nothing merry about Christmasland in NOS4A2. Joe Hill tells the story of decrepit child thief Charlie Manx, who travels the country in his Rolls Royce Wraith taking mistreated kids to Christmasland, where they live happily forever playing games like "bite the smallest" and "scissors for the drifter". The only girl who managed to escape his clutches and put Manx in prison for life finds that even Manx's death can't keep him from his quest to make sure every mistreated child is taken to Christmasland. As eerie as a Bing Crosby album played at half speed, NOS4A2 is a thoroughly creepy and compulsively readable supernatural thriller. Kate Mulgrew shines as narrator, turning in a spot-on performance as Victoria McQueen, a tough-as-nails if emotionally frail heroine. (Michael, Audible editor)

Critic reviews

"Quite simply the best horror writer of our generation, Joe Hill’s masterful storytelling is on full display in NOS4A2. It is by turns terrifying and hilarious, horrifying and full of heart, and relentlessly compelling." (Michael Koryta, New York Times bestselling author of The Prophet)
"Fascinating and utterly engaging, this novel is sure to leave readers wanting more. One thing is for certain, however. After reading this book, readers will never hear Christmas carols in quite the same way again." ( Library Journal, starred review)
"[A] new take on the fantasy-horror genre...Highly recommended." ( The Sun Herald Sydney, Australia)

Apple did not fall far from the tree

Great characterization. Good pace. Slow build to a climax. Reading was good. Will read more of Joe Hill.

WHAT A RIDE!

Joe Hill stories are always “a fun ride”, but this one was literally.
And OMG, the fabulous Kate Mulgrew breathed so much life into this with her performance.

BRAVO! More please.

WHO wrote this? Stephen & Tabitha’s “kid?” Hmmmm

This story is great. In my opinion, it is very close to Kings quality, and definitely his imagination is there. Not sure why I expected any different. This was recommended for me several times before I got it, now I’m going to search for more of his stuff immediately!

I love how freely he ties in Stephen’s universes into the story. Several Easter eggs that made me smile and feel like I was reading something familiar from the old man himself. I listen to A LOT of audio books. I’m so pleased to have stories that hold my attention. Most stories don’t!

Yay, for the continuation of the King legacy and their service to the world!

Brilliant and a fun fun time. Wow what a story!

I completely disagree with the negative reviews about this book that I’ve read here on audible. This was my first experience with Joe Hills writing and I must say “ Just Wow!” He is definitely on par or a chip off the old block being Stephen Kings son. I recently listened to Stephen’s recently released book Fairytale and fell in love with it. That being said I did the exact same thing with this book NOS4A2. What an imaginative and great concept and the writing develops the characters nicely…this was also accomplished in a major way with Kate Mulgrew’s brilliant reading of this novel. Actually she blew me away with her distinctive voices with each character…. Never distracting always adding so much dimension to each character and frequently scene chewing emotion to the entire book. I can’t say enough good things about my experience with this book. I highly recommend it and am looking forward to seeing the series though I have my doubts I’ll love it anywhere near as much as I did listening to it. As I said I don’t get some of the so so and negative reviews, shows me to not always take others opinions about literature to heart. Thanks Joe!! What a fun fun time!

Great Narrator!

Kate Mulgrew knocked this narration out of the park. Great story. It’s a long story and worth the time. It grabbed my interest immediately and kept it in a chokehold through the end.

The narrator is ✨amazing✨but...

the story itself dragggged. I honestly think it could decent book if they cut out 60% of the chapters and got to Christmas land earlier. The best part of the book was the last hour.

🤌

Outstanding performance that elevated this fairly well thought out story that seems to just be missing something. overall, it was hard to put down and I found myself finding time to squeeze in a chapter whenever possible and engaging enough to hold my ADD brain in place, (which says a lot).
Many shades of his fathers work, not sure if he would take that as a compliment, but the influence is clearly there.
This was suggested to me as an introduction to JH, and left enough of an impression for me to sample more of his work.

Outstanding Symphony of Horror

It is so refreshing to come across a writer that writes to the, "smart reader". This was my first Joe Hill book and I was surprised and impressed by the caliber of his writing, he has definitely inherited his fathers, (Stephen King's), ability to spin a  spooky yarn that takes you on a gripping roller coaster ride.

A fast pace, combined with well constructed characters provoked some thrilling and unexpected intensity. From the mystical heroine to the horrible villains, the characters have such depth that they draw you right into their dreadful altered reality.  For the thriller/horror seeker this scary and suspenseful read will not disappoint.

A 115 year old convicted kidnapper/murderer, awakens from a 5 year coma,.. dies,.. gets embalmed, and then....walks out of the  hospital...
As an act of revenge against the young girl who aided in his conviction years earlier, he and his creepy, murdering minion, snatch her young son with the intent of taking him into a bone chilling, fantasy world; "Christmasland". He would only be one of the many.
A brave, mystical, but also, damaged heroin must use all of her recourses and abilities to try to save her son from a dammed eternity.

The narrator did a great job with the up and down pace and the different character voices.  I will be looking for Hills next book with the hope that he can keep up the highly exciting, first rate plot lines.

GREAT HORROR!

I LIKED THIS BOOK. IT WAS SCARY, SUSPENSEFUL, WEIRD, CRAZY, AND MACABRE. I PRIMARILY LOVE HORROR AND THRILLER SO THIS WAS RIGHT UP MY ALLY. I WILL SAY I DO NOT LIKE ALL JOE HILL BOOKS BUT HE SCORED HIGH ON MY LIST WITH HIS SPOOKY "VAMPIRE" VILLAIN AND HIS SIDE-KICK. FEMALE LEAD WAS AWESOME AND COULD RELATE A LOT WITH HER. HE DOES WRITE LIKE HIS DAY, VERY IN DEPTH CHARACTERS AND STORY LINE.
